Performance Cold Air Intake for Dodge Durango (2004-2009) 4.7L V8 (Magnum)
The factory air intake system on your 4.7L V8 Durango is, frankly, a choke point. Designed for noise reduction and cost-effectiveness, not performance, it typically consists of restrictive plastic tubing and a small airbox that pulls in hot air from under the hood. This hot, turbulent air is less dense, meaning your engine isn’t getting the optimal oxygen supply it needs for efficient combustion.
This Dual Twin Cold Air Intake system is engineered to directly address those limitations. We’re talking about relocating the air filters to a cooler, more open area, allowing your engine to breathe in colder, denser air. Combine that with a smoother, larger diameter intake path, and you’ve got a recipe for better volumetric efficiency and a noticeable bump in power and torque, exactly where you need it for a vehicle like the Durango.
Why You Need This Upgrade
- Real-World Horsepower & Torque: You’ll feel a tangible difference, not just on a dyno sheet. Expect better acceleration off the line and more muscle for passing on the highway, especially noticeable when the truck is loaded.
- Improved Fuel Economy (with disciplined driving): By optimizing the air-to-fuel ratio and improving combustion, your engine runs more efficiently. If you can keep your foot out of it, you’ll see a slight uptick in MPG – consider it a bonus!
- Aggressive V8 Sound: Let’s be honest, part of the fun is hearing that 4.7L V8 roar. This intake amplifies the natural engine harmonics, giving your Durango a deeper, more authoritative growl under acceleration. It’s addicting.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on, but requires patience with heat-baked engine bay plastics.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm deep socket, extension, and ratchet (For battery terminal and factory airbox bolts)
- 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver (For securing band clamps)
- Panel popper / trim removal tool (To safely unclip the wire harness anchors)
- Silicone spray lubricant or clean engine oil (Critical for the sensor transfer)
The 2004-2009 Dodge Durango 4.7L uses a fragile Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor plugged directly into the plastic factory resonator. After years of heat cycling, the plastic locking tabs become incredibly brittle. Do NOT pry it out with a screwdriver. Gently twist it counter-clockwise 90 degrees and pull straight out. When transferring it to the aftermarket tube, the new rubber grommet will be stiff. Use a drop of oil or silicone spray so the sensor slides in easily without snapping the tip off into your new intake!
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2004-2009 Dodge Durango 4.7L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and to clear the ECU’s learned fuel trims.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature sensor on the factory air tube. Release the locking tab and pull the harness plug off. Use a panel popper to free the harness wire tie from the factory plastic tube so the wiring has slack.
- Disconnect the PCV Breather Hose: Pull the factory crankcase breather hose off the side of the factory intake box. If it is stuck, gently walk it back and forth; don’t yank it or the plastic nipple will snap.
- Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Take your 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver and loosen the band clamp securing the massive factory resonator box (often called the "throttle body hat" on the forums) to the throttle body.
- Unbolt and Remove the Airbox: Grab your 10mm socket and extension to remove the bolts holding the lower factory airbox to the passenger side fender apron. Once loose, firmly pull the entire airbox and resonator assembly up and out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Black Cold Air Intake
- Mount the New Heat Shield: Drop the supplied aftermarket heat shield into the factory airbox location. Secure it to the OEM mounting holes using the supplied hardware and your 10mm socket.
- Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the 4.7L throttle body. Slide two hose clamps over the coupler, and tighten the throttle body side down snugly with your 8mm nut driver. Leave the intake-tube side clamp loose for now.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Push the supplied rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new black intake tube. Apply a quick spray of silicone lubricant to the inside of the grommet, then gently push and twist the factory IAT sensor into place. Reconnect the wire harness until it clicks securely.
- Seat the Intake Tube: Slide the assembled intake tube into the throttle body coupler, then pass the filter end through the heat shield opening. Once everything is aligned without binding, tighten down the remaining clamp at the throttle body with your 8mm nut driver. Push the factory PCV breather hose onto the welded nipple on the new tube.
- Mount the Filter and Final Checks: Slide the high-flow air filter onto the end of the tube and lock it down tightly with an 8mm nut driver. Double-check all clamps and bolts for tightness. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. On the first startup, do NOT touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds; let the Durango idle so the ECU can properly adjust to the increased airflow.
