  • Panel popper tool (to save brittle harness clips)
  • Silicone spray lubricant or WD-40 (crucial for sensor transfer)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
Durango forums universally despise the giant factory plastic resonator sitting on top of the throttle body (affectionately known as the "Hemi Hat"). It sits on a rubber mounting stud that practically glues itself to the plastic over time. Don’t just rip it upward, or you risk breaking the bracket. Spray a little lubricant under the hat onto the rubber stud, wiggle it side to side, and it will pop right off. Also, handle the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor delicately—its locking tab is notoriously brittle after 15+ years of engine heat.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench. This prevents check engine lights on your 2004-2007 Dodge Durango 5.7L while we unplug sensors.
  2. Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature sensor on the side of the factory intake tube. Depress the plastic locking tab and pull the connector straight off. Never pull by the wires. Use your panel popper to gently pry the wire harness anchor out of the plastic tube so it hangs free.
  3. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Take your 8mm nut driver and loosen the worm-gear clamp holding the factory tube to the throttle body.

  5. Evict the Hemi Hat: Pull the front airbox assembly straight up out of its rubber grommets. Next, grab the massive Hemi Hat resonator, wiggle it to break the seal, and pull firmly upward off the center mounting stud. Extract the entire factory intake system from the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Dodge Durango (2004-2007)

  1. Mount the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the supplied silicone coupler over your throttle body. Tighten the throttle body side clamp using your 8mm nut driver, but leave the intake-tube side clamp loose for now.
  2. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Spray a tiny drop of silicone lubricant onto the factory sensor’s O-ring. Gently twist and pull the IAT sensor out of the factory tube. Press the sensor firmly into the new rubber grommet provided on your aftermarket intake tube until it seats flush.
  3. Assemble the Heat Shield: Bolt the new heat shield together (if shipped in multiple pieces) and drop it into the factory lower mounting points. Secure it using the supplied hardware and your 10mm socket.
  4. Position the New Tube: Slide the new Cold Air Intake tube through the heat shield and seat it deep into the throttle body coupler. Check your clearances against the radiator hose and AC lines, then lock down the remaining hose clamps using the 8mm nut driver.
  5. Mount the Filter and Plug In: Slide the high-flow air filter onto the end of the tube and tighten the filter clamp with your 8mm nut driver. Finally, snap the IAT sensor wire harness back in until you hear a solid click.
  6. The 20-Second ECU Rule: Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten it down with your 10mm wrench. Start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the 5.7L HEMI idle so the ECU can read the new IAT parameters and adjust the air/fuel mixture for the increased airflow.
