Tired of that sluggish feeling when you press the accelerator in your PT Cruiser? Imagine a crisper throttle response and a more satisfying pull from your 2.4L engine, making daily drives genuinely more engaging.

Performance Cold Air Intake for Chrysler PT Cruiser (2.4L Non-Turbo)

The factory air box in the 2.4L non-turbo PT Cruiser was designed with noise suppression and cost-efficiency in mind, often at the expense of performance. Its restrictive design, convoluted air path, and often flimsy materials create bottlenecks that choke the engine, limiting its ability to breathe freely and hindering its true potential, especially in the mid-range.

This high-flow cold air intake system is engineered to solve those limitations directly. By replacing the entire restrictive OEM assembly with a smooth, mandrel-bent T-304 aluminum tube and a high-flow, reusable filter, it dramatically improves airflow. This allows your PT Cruiser’s engine to draw in a colder, denser charge of oxygen, translating into a noticeable boost in throttle response and a more robust power delivery across the RPM band.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Enhanced Power Delivery: Feel a tangible improvement in acceleration and passing power, giving your 2.4L PT Cruiser the responsiveness it always craved for daily driving and highway merges.
  • Sharper Throttle Response: Eliminate that “dead spot” or lag you might feel with the stock setup. This intake ensures air gets to your throttle body faster, making the car feel more connected to your foot.
  • Premium, Durable Construction: Crafted from lightweight T-304 aluminum, this intake isn’t just about performance; it’s built to last. It resists corrosion and helps maintain cooler intake temperatures for consistent power.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time for your 2001-2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.4L

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - The EDZ engine bay is notoriously cramped, but the intake swap is straightforward bolt-on work once the bulky factory plastics are out of the way.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm deep socket and ratchet (For battery terminals and factory airbox bolts)
  • 8mm socket or nut driver (For hose clamps)
  • Flathead screwdriver (For prying stubborn clips)
  • Panel popper tool (To release plastic wiring harness retainers)
  • Silicone spray or soapy water (For safely seating the delicate IAT sensor)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is pushed into a rubber grommet on the OEM tube. Because the PT Cruiser engine bay is tightly packed and runs extremely hot, that rubber is likely rock-hard after two decades of heat cycling. Do not pry the plastic IAT sensor with a metal screwdriver, or it will snap in half. Hit the edges with silicone spray, wiggle it gently side-to-side, and pull straight out.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2001-2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.4L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and clear the ECU memory.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Locate the IAT sensor on the factory intake tube. Press the locking tab and pull the connector off. Use your panel popper to gently pry up any plastic harness retainers secured to the factory airbox so the wires can hang free.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Line: Pull the rubber crankcase breather hose (PCV line) off the side of the factory intake box. If it is stuck, carefully walk it off with your flathead screwdriver.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Use your 8mm socket to fully loosen the hose clamps securing the intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Remove the Airbox: Remove the factory mounting bolts securing the airbox to the core support and engine block using your 10mm socket. Lift the entire clunky OEM airbox assembly up and wrestle it out of the engine bay.
  6. Extract the IAT Sensor: Carefully twist and pull the factory IAT sensor out of the old rubber grommet on the factory tube. Set it aside in a safe location where it won’t get crushed.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Chrysler PT Cruiser (2001-2009) 2.4L Non-Turbo Engine

  1. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the factory throttle body. Secure the throttle body side using an 8mm socket to tighten the provided worm gear or T-bolt clamp.
  2. Prep the New Intake Tube: Press the new rubber IAT grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your aftermarket intake tube. Apply a single drop of soapy water or silicone spray to the inside of the grommet, and gently push the factory IAT sensor into place until it is fully seated.
  3. Mount the Intake: Slide the new cold air intake tube into the silicone coupler at the throttle body. Route the other end (with the high-flow air filter attached) into the space vacated by the factory airbox to draw in colder, denser air.
  4. Secure and Tighten: Connect the PCV breather hose to the welded bung on the new intake pipe. Tighten all remaining hose clamps firmly with your 8mm socket. Reconnect the IAT sensor wiring harness until you hear it click.
  5. Re-energize and Learn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The ECU needs this uninterrupted idle time to read the new airflow dynamics and adjust the fuel trims safely.
