Maximize Your Chevy Suburban’s Gen IV Small Block V8: 5.3L & 6.0L Cold Air Intake
Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Chevrolet Suburban 1500 and 2500 owners running the legendary Gen IV Small Block V8 engine, whether it’s the robust 5.3L or the potent 6.0L. If you use your Suburban for towing, hauling, or simply want crisper throttle response and a more satisfying V8 rumble, this upgrade is for you.
The Problem: Let’s be real, the factory intake on your Gen IV Small Block V8 in the Suburban was built for quiet cruising and emissions, not pure performance. It’s typically a restrictive maze of plastic, a bulky airbox, and it often pulls in warm engine bay air. This chokes your engine’s ability to breathe freely, particularly under load. From my years wrenching on these trucks, I’ve seen firsthand how much potential is left on the table by that stock setup, leading to sluggish acceleration and reduced efficiency when you really need it.
The Solution: Our precision-engineered cold air intake system is a direct bolt-on upgrade that completely transforms how your Gen IV Small Block V8 inhales. By replacing the bottlenecked factory components with high-flow induction piping, a performance-optimized heat shield, and a superior air filter, we deliver a consistent stream of cooler, denser, oxygen-rich air directly to your engine. This isn’t just about noise; it’s about optimizing combustion, eliminating factory restrictions, and allowing your engine to achieve its full power potential. You’ll feel the difference immediately – stronger pulls, noticeably better throttle response, and a more aggressive, yet refined, V8 rumble that truly matches the Suburban’s presence.
Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade
- Performance Gains: Experience a tangible boost in horsepower and torque, up to 10%, for significantly improved acceleration, passing power, and towing capability. Cooler, denser air means more oxygen in the combustion chamber, translating directly to more raw power for your Gen IV Small Block V8.
- Enhanced Durability & Filtration: Features a high-flow, washable, and reusable air filter engineered for long-term use and superior filtration. This protects your valuable engine from harmful debris while maximizing airflow, saving you money on disposable filters in the long run.
- Effortless Installation: Designed as a direct-fit replacement, this kit includes all the necessary couplers, clamps, and hardware for a straightforward installation. You won’t need special tools or complex modifications, making it a great weekend project for any enthusiast.
- Throaty V8 Sound: Elevate your driving experience with a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note under acceleration, highlighting the signature sound of your Gen IV Small Block V8 without being overly intrusive during normal driving.
- Improved Fuel Efficiency: By optimizing the engine’s breathing and combustion efficiency, you may also see a subtle improvement in fuel economy under normal driving conditions – a nice bonus for such a powerful upgrade.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on, but requires a delicate touch with the factory MAF sensor and brittle plastics.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket & Ratchet (For the battery terminal and factory airbox bolts)
- 8mm Socket or Nut Driver (For factory and aftermarket hose clamps)
- T20 Torx Bit (To remove the factory MAF sensor)
- 4mm Allen Wrench (Typically required for the aftermarket MAF housing bolts)
- Flathead Screwdriver & Panel Popper (To assist with locking tabs and wire harness clips)
The NNBS/GMT900 community universally hates the factory PCV breather hose on the driver’s side valve cover. After years of heat cycling in the engine bay, the grey plastic locking ring becomes incredibly brittle. Depress the lock tab gently; if you muscle it, it will shatter, and you’ll be stuck making a parts run. Additionally, the factory intake tube has a massive resonator box that gets in the way—ripping it out clears up the engine bay, but take care not to drop dirt into the exposed throttle body. Finally, never touch the exposed element of the MAF sensor with your bare hands! Oils from your skin will fry it.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part on your 2007-2008 Chevrolet Suburban 5.3L 6.0L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket or wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
- Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the factory intake tube. Slide the red locking tab back, press down on the clip, and pull the harness free. Use a panel popper to free the wiring harness from any retaining clips on the airbox.
- Remove the PCV Breather: Carefully depress the grey locking tab on the hard plastic PCV breather line attached to the intake tube resonator. Gently slide it off the port.
- Loosen the Hose Clamps: Use an 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp securing the intake tube to the throttle body, and the clamp securing the tube to the airbox lid. Wiggle the bulky factory tube assembly off and set it aside.
- Yank the Factory Airbox: The lower airbox is held in place by rubber push-grommets. Pull straight up with firm, even pressure to pop it out of the mounting tray. If your new kit replaces the factory tray entirely, remove the bolts holding the tray to the inner fender using a 10mm socket.
- Extract the MAF Sensor: Using a T20 Torx bit, carefully remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor in the factory housing. Pull the sensor straight out and place it on a clean rag in a safe location.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake
- Prep the Heat Shield: Assemble the new aftermarket heat shield and edge trim according to the kit’s instructions. Drop it into the engine bay and bolt it down to the factory mounting points using your 10mm socket.
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: Gently slide the factory MAF sensor into the new intake tube’s machined port. Ensure the directional arrow on the sensor points toward the throttle body. Secure it using the supplied button-head screws and a 4mm Allen wrench. Do not overtighten, or you will strip the threads.
- Mount the Couplers: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new air filter/heat shield adapter. Slip the new hose clamps over the ends but leave them loose.
- Seat the Intake Tube: Wiggle the new Cold Air Intake tube into the silicone couplers. Adjust the rotation so it doesn’t rub against the fan shroud or AC lines. Once properly aligned, tighten all hose clamps securely with an 8mm socket.
- Reconnect the Plumbing: Slide the factory PCV breather hose onto the new aluminum nipple on the intake tube until it clicks securely. Reconnect the MAF sensor wire harness and push the red locking tab forward to lock it.
- The ECU Learn Procedure: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm socket. Turn the key to the ON position and start the engine. Do not touch the vehicle gas pedal for 20 seconds; let the ECU learn the new airflow volume at idle before you take it for a test drive.
