Tools You Will Need

- 5/16" nut driver or Flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
- Panel popper tool or Needle-nose pliers (for removing plastic wire loom clips)
- Silicone lubricant spray (crucial for safely extracting 20-year-old sensors)
- Clean shop rags (to protect the exposed throttle body)
The GMT400 / OBS platform community universally hates the massive factory air resonator (the "Vortec hat") that sits over the throttle body. When removing this, you must extract the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. After decades of heat cycling, the rubber grommet holding it is petrified. Do not yank it! Spray it heavily with silicone lube, let it soak, and gently twist it out. If you force it, you will snap the fragile plastic probe off inside the tube.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using your 10mm socket. This resets the ECU and prevents accidental check engine lights on your 1996-2000 Chevrolet Silverado Tahoe 5.0L 5.7L.

- Reconnect PCV and Wiring: Route the supplied PCV breather hose from the engine valve cover port to the welded fitting on your new intake tube. Plug the factory wiring harnesses back into the MAF and IAT sensors until they click.
- Power Up and Relearn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten it with your 10mm socket. Start the vehicle, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds.
