Boost Your 2.2L “2200” S-Series: Cold Air Intake for Chevy S10 & GMC Sonoma
Who It’s For: Designed specifically for 1998-2003 Chevy S10 Pickup and GMC Sonoma owners running the 2.2L “2200” S-Series L4 engine.
The Problem: If you’ve ever driven your S10 or Sonoma with the 2.2L “2200” S-Series, you know it’s a workhorse, but it can feel a bit sluggish, especially when loaded down or hitting a highway on-ramp. That’s largely due to the restrictive factory air intake. The stock system prioritizes quiet operation over performance, creating turbulent airflow and heat-soak issues that effectively choke your small four-cylinder, robbing it of the dense, cool air it needs to make efficient power.
The Solution: We engineered this cold air intake system to correct those factory design flaws for your 2.2L “2200” S-Series. By replacing the convoluted factory air box and tubing with a streamlined T304 lightweight aluminum induction pipe and a high-flow filter, we deliver a constant, dense stream of oxygen-rich air directly to your engine. The result is improved throttle response, more confident merging, and the extra grunt you need for daily work and weekend projects.
Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade
- Increased Performance: Experience a noticeable gain in horsepower and torque – up to 10% across the power band. That means more responsive acceleration and the extra muscle your 2.2L “2200” S-Series needs for towing light loads or tackling inclines without feeling winded.
- Enhanced Durability & Cooling: Crafted from robust T304 lightweight aluminum, this intake system isn’t just about flow; it’s about endurance. The aluminum construction helps dissipate heat faster than the stock plastic, ensuring your engine breathes cooler air for consistent performance and longevity.
- Straightforward Installation: This kit is designed for a direct bolt-on fitment. All necessary couplers, clamps, and mounting hardware are included. Just disconnect your battery’s negative terminal for a minute during installation – it allows your ECU to recalibrate to the increased airflow for optimal air-to-fuel ratios right from the start.

Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools, but wrestling the infamous factory fender silencer out of the engine bay takes a little patience.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet (The S-truck standard for battery and air box bolts)
- 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver (For hose clamps)
- Panel popper tool (To remove the factory core support push-pins)
- Silicone spray or WD-40 (Crucial for safely extracting the factory IAT sensor)
- T20 Torx bit (Depending on your specific LN2 engine year for the MAF/sensor housing)
When pulling the factory intake on the 1998-2003 GMC Sonoma 2.2L, the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is shoved directly into the rubber intake tract. After two decades of under-hood heat, that rubber is essentially concrete. Do NOT pull the sensor by the wires. Spray the base with silicone lubricant, gently twist it to break the seal, and pry it up from the plastic base. If you rip those brittle factory wires, your truck is going to throw a Check Engine Light and idle like garbage.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 1998-2003 GMC Sonoma 2.2L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and reset the ECU trims.
- Unplug the Sensors: Locate the IAT sensor (and MAF sensor, if equipped on your specific year) on the factory intake tube. Depress the locking tabs and carefully pull the harnesses free. Tuck them safely out of the way.
- Disconnect the PCV Breather: Pull the rigid plastic PCV breather hose out of the side of the factory intake tube. Be gentle; the plastic gets brittle on these LN2 engines.
- Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Grab your 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver and completely loosen the metal hose clamp securing the rubber intake elbow to the throttle body.
- Extract the Factory Air Box and Silencer: Use your 10mm socket to remove the bolts holding the upper air box to the core support. The S10/Sonoma platform has a massive, restrictive plastic silencer tube that dives deep into the passenger fender. Wiggle the entire assembly back and forth while pulling upward to pop it out of the lower rubber grommets. Remove the entire unit from the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake
- Assemble the Heat Shield: If your kit includes a heat shield, assemble the panels using the supplied hardware and a 10mm wrench. Mount the edge trim to protect the new intake tube from chafing against the metal. Bolt the shield into the factory air box mounting locations on the core support.
- Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone step-coupler onto the throttle body. Slide two hose clamps over the coupler, but only tighten the throttle body side right now using your 8mm nut driver.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Push the supplied rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new aluminum intake tube. Lubricate the factory IAT sensor you saved earlier with a drop of clean engine oil or silicone spray, and press it firmly into the new grommet until it seats flush. Do not force it dry or you will tear the grommet.
- Mount the Intake Tube and Filter: Guide the new intake tube into the throttle body coupler. Attach the high-flow air filter to the end of the tube sitting inside the heat shield area. Reconnect the PCV breather line to the welded nipple on the new tube. Tighten all remaining hose clamps firmly with your 8mm nut driver. Reconnect the IAT/MAF sensor harnesses.
- Relearn the ECU: Double-check all clamps and sensor connections. Reconnect your negative battery terminal using the 10mm wrench. Start the truck, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. The 1998-2003 GMC Sonoma 2.2L ECU needs this uninterrupted idle time to adjust its fuel trims to the massive increase in incoming airflow.
