Cold Air Intake System for Chevy S-10, GMC Sonoma & Isuzu Hombre (1997-2003) 2.2L – Unleash Compact Truck Power
The S-10, Sonoma, and Hombre defined the compact truck era—versatile workhorses ready for any job. Now give your 2.2L engine the performance upgrade it's been craving. Our Cold Air Intake system transforms your truck's breathing, drawing in cooler, denser air for explosive power gains. Whether you're running errands around town or hitting the open road, experience the difference that unrestricted airflow makes.
Cold Air = More Power
Your factory air box chokes your engine with warm, restricted air. Our cold air intake changes everything by drawing in cooler, oxygen-rich air from outside the engine bay, resulting in 7-10% more horsepower and 6-8% increased torque. Feel the difference immediately—sharper throttle response throughout low and mid RPM ranges, explosive acceleration when you need it, and improved fuel economy that keeps more money in your pocket.
Premium Construction, Performance-Driven Design
Engineered from lightweight, polished T-304 aluminum, this intake system maximizes airflow through your stock manifold while producing an intense, deep sporty sound that announces your presence. The upgraded high-quality washable cone filter delivers exceptional filtration and unrestricted airflow, protecting your engine while unleashing its full potential. Unlike cheap alternatives, this filter only requires cleaning every 50,000 miles—saving you time and money on replacements.
Complete Kit, Simple Installation
Designed specifically for 1997-2003 models with 2.2L L4 engines (both automatic and manual transmissions), this complete kit includes everything you need for installation—all mounting accessories exactly as shown. No additional parts required. With basic hand tools like screwdrivers and socket wrenches, most owners complete installation in under an hour. Simply remove your factory air box, bolt in your new performance system, and you're ready to roll.
What You'll Gain
- Proven Performance: 7-10% horsepower increase, 6-8% torque boost

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Straightforward bolt-on, but requires wrestling 20-year-old brittle factory plastics and handling a delicate sensor.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm socket and wrench (for battery terminal and factory airbox bolts)
- 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
- 13mm socket and extension (for the factory resonator bracket)
- Silicone spray lubricant (crucial for sensor removal)
- Panel popper tool (for removing factory wiring loom clips)
The S-series community (the "Dime" guys) universally hates the bulky factory 2.2L LN2 air resonator box. Over time, engine bay heat cycles bake the rubber grommet holding the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor inside the plastic intake tube. Do not just yank it out! You will snap the plastic sensor tip off inside the tube. Hit the base of the sensor with silicone spray, twist it gently back and forth to break the seal, and pull straight out.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights on your 1997-2003 Chevrolet GMC S-10 Sonoma 2.2L.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the factory IAT sensor plugged into the side of the main plastic intake tube. Carefully depress the locking tab on the wiring harness to unplug it. Apply your silicone spray lubricant, gently twist, and safely extract the sensor. Set it aside in a safe location.
- Loosen the Clamps: Use your 8mm socket or a flathead screwdriver to loosen the factory hose clamps securing the intake tube to the throttle body and the airbox.
- Remove the Resonator Box: Grab your 13mm socket and extension to unbolt the massive factory resonator box sitting directly over the valve cover. The forum consensus agrees that ditching this useless piece of plastic is the best part of this install, as it finally gives you clearance to access your spark plugs without cursing.
- Extract the Airbox: Remove the factory airbox assembly by unbolting the core support brackets with a 10mm socket. Use your panel popper tool to detach any wiring harnesses clipped to the box, then lift the entire OEM intake assembly out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Chevy S-10 & GMC Sonoma (1997-2003) 2.2L Engine
- Mount the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the new silicone reducer coupler onto your 2.2L throttle body. Slip two hose clamps loosely over the coupler. Snug the throttle body side down using an 8mm socket, but leave the tube side loose for adjustment.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Push the supplied aftermarket rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new aluminum intake tube. Apply a tiny drop of silicone spray to the inside of the grommet, then carefully press your factory IAT sensor into place. Ensure it seats fully to prevent engine-killing vacuum leaks.
- Route the Intake Tube: Guide the new intake tube into position, sliding the upper end into the throttle body coupler. Attach the heat shield and high-flow air filter to the lower end, securing the entire assembly to the factory inner fender mounting points using a 10mm socket and the provided hardware.
- Lock It Down: Verify you have adequate clearance around the alternator, radiator hoses, and A/C lines. Once aligned perfectly, lock down all remaining hose clamps tightly with your 8mm socket. Reconnect the IAT sensor wiring harness until you hear it click.
- Perform the ECU Relearn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the truck, but keep your foot off the floorboards. On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts its fuel trims to accommodate the denser, colder airflow.
