Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 1994-1996 B-Body platform is notorious for two massive, restrictive factory intake resonators known in the community as the "Home Plate" (top of engine) and "First Base" (inline elbow). When removing the factory setup to ditch these silencers, you must transfer the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. The Gotcha: The MAF has an airflow direction arrow stamped on the plastic. Put it in backwards, and your LT1 will run incredibly lean, stall out, and throw a Check Engine Light. Make absolutely sure the arrow points toward the throttle body. Additionally, do not pull the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor out by its wires—the 25-year-old pigtail will snap.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights on your 1994-1996 Chevrolet Impala SS 5.7L.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Locate the MAF sensor and the IAT sensor on the factory intake plumbing. Carefully depress the locking tabs and unplug both harnesses. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry the tabs if the 25-year-old plastic refuses to budge. Do not force them.
  3. Evict the Resonators: Grab the large, flat "Home Plate" silencer sitting directly over the intake manifold and pull it firmly upward off its mounting studs. Next, use a 5/16" nut driver to loosen the hose clamps securing the rubber "First Base" elbow to the throttle body and the MAF sensor. Pull the elbow completely off.
  4. Remove the Factory Airbox: Grab your 10mm socket and extension to remove the bolts anchoring the factory air filter housing to the passenger-side fender well. Once unbolted, lift the entire airbox and lower intake assembly out of the engine bay.
  5. Extract the MAF and IAT: Loosen the remaining clamp on the factory housing using a flathead screwdriver and separate the MAF sensor. Set it aside in a safe, clean spot. Gently wiggle the IAT sensor back and forth until it pops out of its factory rubber grommet.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Chevy Impala SS (1994-1996) 5.7L V8 Engine

  1. Install the Heat Shield: Drop your new aftermarket airbox or heat shield into the factory fender mounting locations. Secure it tightly using the supplied hardware and a 10mm socket.
  2. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto both ends of your factory MAF sensor. Verify the stamped arrow is pointing toward the throttle body. Slide the assembly into the new intake tract and lightly snug the clamps with a 5/16" nut driver so you still have room to make adjustments.
  3. Relocate the IAT Sensor: Lightly coat the plastic tip of the factory IAT sensor with a drop of silicone spray. Push it firmly into the pre-drilled rubber grommet on your new aftermarket aluminum or plastic intake tube until it is fully seated. Reconnect the IAT wiring harness.
  4. Route and Tighten: Mount the main intake tube between the throttle body and the new airbox. Check your clearances around the ABS lines, radiator hoses, and the water pump. Once everything aligns perfectly, lock the system down by tightening all T-bolt or worm gear clamps with an 8mm deep socket or 5/16" nut driver. Reconnect the MAF wiring harness.
  5. ECU Relearn Protocol: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. Turn the key and start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the LT1 idle untouched so the ECU can calibrate to the newly unrestricted volume of cold air and adjust its fuel trims properly.
