L-body platform enthusiasts know the 3100 SFI engine suffers from the dreaded "rolling idle." This is almost always caused by hidden cracks deep inside the folds of the factory accordion intake bellows letting unmetered air past the sensors. Pulling this old junk out cures the vacuum leaks, but be extremely careful unplugging the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. The 1990s Chevrolet plastic tab will snap instantly if forced. Use your small flathead to gently assist the locking tab before pulling.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your Chevrolet using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to clear old fuel trims.
- Disconnect the Sensor: Locate the IAT sensor pushed into the factory accordion tube. Gently lift the locking tab with a small flathead screwdriver and unplug the wiring harness. Tuck the harness out of the way.
