Unlock Peak Performance: Cold Air Intake for Your Chevy LT1 / L99 Small Block B-Body
Who It’s For: Designed specifically for 1994-1996 Chevy Impala SS and Caprice owners running the legendary LT1 / L99 Small Block engine family. If you’re looking to wake up that classic B-Body and get more out of your V8, this is your next essential upgrade.
The Problem: If you’ve spent any time behind the wheel of a 1990s B-Body, you know the factory intake system on your LT1 / L99 Small Block was engineered for quiet cruising, not spirited performance. The restrictive air box and convoluted tubing choke off vital airflow, especially under load, robbing your V8 of precious horsepower and torque. It’s notorious for pulling in hot, ambient engine bay air, leading to heat soak and inconsistent power delivery, especially on a long pull or hot day. That stock setup simply can’t keep up with the demands of these iconic engines.
The Solution: We engineered this cold air intake system to directly address and correct these factory design flaws. By providing a direct, streamlined path for cooler, denser outside air, it transforms your LT1 / L99 Small Block into a more efficient air pump. This means a more complete combustion cycle, delivering noticeable gains in horsepower, torque, and throttle response right where you feel it most. Forget the sluggish factory breathing – this system lets your B-Body truly exhale.
Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade
- Real-World Power Gain: Experience a genuine 5-13 horsepower increase. This isn’t just a number on paper; it’s improved acceleration, stronger mid-range pull, and a more responsive pedal that brings your B-Body to life, making highway passing and spirited driving far more enjoyable.
- Superior Thermal Control: Our design actively draws in cooler, denser air from outside the confines of the hot engine bay. Cooler air means more oxygen molecules per cubic foot, translating to a more potent combustion charge and consistent power, preventing the dreaded heat soak that plagues stock systems.
- Crisp, Instant Response: By streamlining the air intake path and eliminating turbulence, this system provides a more direct and immediate connection between your throttle pedal and the pavement. You’ll feel a sharper, more eager response every time you touch the gas.
- Aggressive V8 Roar: Beyond the power, this intake enhances the deep, authoritative induction sound of your V8. That iconic B-Body growl becomes even more pronounced and aggressive, truly matching the car’s muscle-car heritage.
- Show-Stopping Style & Filtration: Featuring a premium blue finish, this intake adds a high-performance, custom look under the hood. More importantly, the high-flow performance air filter blocks harmful debris while ensuring maximum airflow for both the 4.3L L99 and 5.7L LT1 power plants.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on, but requires delicate handling of 30-year-old factory plastics and sensitive air metering sensors.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket and Ratchet (For the battery and factory air box bolts)
- 8mm Nut Driver or Flathead Screwdriver (For worm-gear hose clamps)
- Needle-Nose Pliers (For the factory PCV breather hose clamp)
- Panel Popper Tool (To cleanly remove the factory wire harness push-pins)
- T20 Torx Bit (If separating the factory Mass Air Flow sensor from its housing)
Welcome to the B-Body platform. The forum community universally hates the massive, restrictive factory resonators known as "Home Plate" (the giant black box sitting on top of the LT1/L99 intake manifold) and "First Base" (the smaller box on the intake tube). When removing these, be extremely careful with the factory rubber elbow connecting to the throttle body. It is notoriously brittle on the 1994-1996 Chevrolet Caprice 4.3L 5.7L and will tear if you force it. Additionally, the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor and the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor are highly sensitive. Never drop the MAF, and never spray throttle body cleaner directly into it, or you will ruin the heated element inside.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect the ECU.
- Unplug the Sensors: Carefully depress the locking tabs and disconnect the wiring harnesses from the MAF sensor and the IAT sensor. Use a panel popper tool to gently detach any plastic harness clips secured to the factory intake tube.
- Remove the PCV Breather: Use your needle-nose pliers to squeeze the clamp on the factory breather hose connected to the intake tube, then carefully twist and pull the hose off the fitting.
- Loosen the Clamps and Remove the Baffles: Grab your 8mm nut driver and loosen the hose clamps at the throttle body and the air box. Wiggle the entire factory rubber intake tract—including the "Home Plate" and "First Base" resonators—free from the throttle body and set it aside.
- Extract the Factory Air Box: Use your 10mm socket to unbolt the lower factory air box assembly from the fender lip. Lift the entire box out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Chevy Caprice (1994-1996) 4.3L 5.7L V8 Engines
- Transfer the MAF and IAT Sensors: Gently twist and pull the IAT sensor out of the factory rubber elbow and press it into the provided grommet on your new intake tube. Depending on your kit, unbolt the MAF sensor using a T20 Torx bit or simply unclamp it, and install it inline with your new silicone couplers. Ensure the directional arrow on the MAF points toward the throttle body.
- Install the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the space vacated by the factory air box. Secure it using the provided hardware and your 10mm socket.
- Mount the Intake Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the MAF sensor. Insert the new aluminum intake tube and snugly tighten all clamps down with your 8mm nut driver. Do not overtighten and crush the tube.
- Reconnect Hoses and Wiring: Push the factory PCV breather hose onto the new intake tube fitting. Reconnect the wiring harnesses to both the IAT and MAF sensors until you hear an audible click.
- Attach the Filter and Reconnect Power: Slide the high-flow air filter onto the end of the intake tube inside the heat shield and tighten the final clamp. Reconnect your negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds; let the vehicle idle so the ECU can calibrate to the increased airflow.
