Tired of your classic Tahoe feeling sluggish and restricted? Unlock the true potential of your 5.0L or 5.7L V8 with an unrestricted air intake, transforming your daily drive or heavy-duty tasks into a more responsive and powerful experience.

Performance Cold Air Intake for Chevrolet Tahoe (1996-2000) 5.0L / 5.7L V8 Engine

The factory air intake system on your 1996-2000 Chevrolet Tahoe, while functional, is notoriously cramped and restrictive. Its convoluted design, narrow piping, and often-clogged paper filter create a significant bottleneck, preventing your robust 5.0L or 5.7L V8 engine from breathing freely and operating at its peak efficiency. This limitation directly translates to reduced throttle response, diminished horsepower and torque, and a muted engine sound that doesn’t do your V8 justice, especially during acceleration or when towing.

This high-velocity Performance Cold Air Intake kit dramatically re-engineers your Tahoe’s induction path, replacing the inefficient stock air box with a streamlined, mandrel-bent T304 aluminum intake tube and a high-flow performance air filter. By delivering a significantly larger volume of oxygen-rich, cooler air directly to your engine with far less resistance, this upgrade optimizes combustion, boosts horsepower and torque by up to 10%, and sharpens throttle response. Beyond the substantial performance gains, the sleek matte black finish with vibrant red accents provides a striking visual upgrade to your engine bay, complemented by an authoritative V8 growl that truly announces your Tahoe’s presence.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • High-Velocity Induction: Eliminates the restrictive factory air box and ducting, satisfying your V8 engine’s massive demand for air during heavy acceleration, leading to better power delivery.
  • Enhanced Power Output: Optimizes engine efficiency by delivering a greater volume of oxygen-rich air, providing noticeable gains in both horsepower and torque for improved acceleration and towing capability.
  • Exceptional Filtration: Features a high-flow, washable, and reusable performance air filter engineered to maximize airflow while maintaining superior filtration levels, safeguarding your engine’s longevity.
  • Authoritative Sound: Unlocks a deeper, more resonant V8 growl, transforming your Tahoe’s acoustic profile with a muscular, aggressive note whenever you hit the gas.
  • Modern Engine Bay Style: Finished with a premium matte black coating and red performance accessories, this kit provides a professional, modified appearance that significantly upgrades your engine bay’s aesthetic.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic bolt-on, but requires a delicate touch when handling the factory sensors and 25-year-old brittle plastics found on the GMT400 chassis.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm deep socket and ratchet
  • 8mm socket or 5/16-inch nut driver (for hose clamps)
  • Flathead screwdriver or panel popper (for wire harness clips)
  • Pliers (for the factory spring clamps)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
When working on the OBS (Old Body Style) Vortec engines, the factory PCV breather hose running from the passenger valve cover to the intake is notoriously brittle. Do not yank it. Twist it gently to break the seal so the plastic elbow doesn’t snap off inside the valve cover grommet. Furthermore, your factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is incredibly sensitive. Handle the inline aluminum/plastic MAF housing like glass—never touch the internal honeycomb screen or the hot wires inside, or you’ll be chasing idle surges and check engine lights for weeks.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to prevent throwing a check engine light while we unplug sensors on your 1996-2000 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.0L 5.7L.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Locate the MAF sensor (the inline cylinder near the airbox) and the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. Gently release the locking tabs with your thumb or a flathead screwdriver and unplug the harnesses. Move them safely out of the way.
  3. Ditch the Vortec Hat: It’s time to remove the bulky factory resonator box (affectionately known by forum guys as the "Vortec hat" or "turtle") that sits directly on top of the throttle body. Remove the central securing wingnut or bolt on top, then use your 8mm socket to loosen the band clamp at the base of the throttle body. Lift the hat straight up and off.
  4. Disconnect the Breather: Carefully disconnect the PCV breather hose from the factory intake tube. Use your pliers to squeeze the spring clamp if present, and gently twist the hose off to avoid cracking the old plastic.
  5. Remove the Airbox and MAF: Use your 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamps securing the inline MAF sensor. Carefully pull the MAF sensor out and set it in a safe, clean spot. Finally, unbolt the factory airbox from the fender well using your 10mm socket and pull the entire assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Chevrolet Tahoe (1996-2000) 5.0L / 5.7L V8 Engine

  1. Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the aftermarket heat shield and drop it into the factory airbox location. Secure it to the original fender mounting points using the supplied hardware and your 10mm socket.
  2. Transfer the MAF Sensor: This is critical. Install the supplied silicone couplers onto the new intake tube. Slide your factory inline MAF sensor into the couplers. Look for the airflow arrow stamped on the outside of the MAF housing—this arrow MUST point toward the throttle body. Tighten the clamps down snugly with your 8mm socket.
  3. Seat the Intake Tube: Slide the new silicone coupler over the throttle body and secure it loosely. Guide the new intake tube into place, connecting the MAF housing side to the filter side, and seat it into the throttle body coupler. Reconnect your PCV breather line to the newly provided vacuum port on the aftermarket tube.
  4. Tighten and Reconnect: Tighten down all worm-gear clamps firmly with your 8mm socket. Plug the factory MAF and IAT sensor harnesses back into their respective receptacles until you hear a "click." Double-check every clamp to ensure you don’t have any unmetered air entering the system (vacuum leaks).
  5. The 20-Second Rule: Reconnect your negative battery terminal and tighten it with your 10mm wrench. Turn the key and start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the Tahoe idle so the ECU can properly adjust the fuel trims to compensate for the denser, higher volume of cold air.
