Feel the instant surge of responsiveness and a deeper, more aggressive V8 rumble every time you hit the throttle. Eliminate the frustrating bottlenecks of your OBS Chevy’s stock air intake and let your engine finally breathe the way it was meant to.

Cold Air Intake for Chevrolet C/K 1500 (1996-1999) 5.0L / 5.7L V8 Engine - Black

The factory air intake system on your classic 1996-1999 Chevrolet C/K 1500, especially with the venerable 5.0L or 5.7L Vortec V8, is notorious for its restrictive design. From cramped airboxes to convoluted intake tubes, these components act as a significant bottleneck, starving your engine of the critical airflow it needs for optimal performance, particularly during heavy acceleration or towing.

This high-velocity Cold Air Intake Induction Kit directly addresses these limitations by replacing the entire cumbersome stock assembly with a streamlined, high-flow path. Engineered to deliver a substantially larger volume of cool, oxygen-rich air directly to your engine, this upgrade liberates hidden horsepower and torque, sharpens throttle response, and enhances the authoritative V8 growl your Chevy deserves. Plus, the sleek matte black finish with vibrant red couplers provides a significant aesthetic boost to your engine bay.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Unleash Hidden Power: Eliminates factory restrictions to deliver a significant boost in both horsepower and torque, improving overall engine efficiency by up to 10%.
  • Sharper Throttle Response: Provides your 5.0L or 5.7L V8 with a constant supply of cool air, resulting in more immediate and precise throttle feel.
  • Aggressive V8 Sound: Transforms your truck’s exhaust note into a deeper, more resonant growl, announcing its presence with every press of the pedal.
  • Modern Engine Bay Aesthetics: Features a premium matte black intake tube and vibrant red couplers, giving your OBS Chevy a custom, performance-oriented look.
  • Durable & Reliable: Constructed from heavy-duty materials designed to withstand the harsh engine bay environment, ensuring long-lasting performance and reliability.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 2/10 - Beginner friendly. The GMT400 platform is spacious, but old plastic can be tricky.

Tools You Will Need

  • Flathead Screwdriver (Standard and Long reach) - For hose clamps.
  • 10mm Socket & Ratchet - The universal GM wrench size for mounting brackets.
  • 8mm (or 5/16") Wrench - Specifically for GM side-post battery terminals.
  • T20 or T25 Torx Bit - Likely needed if transferring the MAF sensor from the housing.
  • 4mm Allen Key - Commonly required for aftermarket hardware/clamps.
  • Panel Popper / Trim Tool - To remove the wire harness clips without snapping them.
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 1996-1999 Vortec engines rely heavily on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Do not install the MAF sensor backward. There is a flow arrow stamped on the sensor housing; it must point towards the engine (throttle body). If you flip this, your 5.7L will run lean, misfire, and throw a CEL immediately. Also, handle the 25+ year-old sensor wiring loom with extreme care—the insulation is likely brittle and prone to cracking.

Phase 1: Removing the Restrictive Factory Vortec Intake

  1. Disconnect the Battery: On these GMT400 trucks, use an 8mm or 5/16" wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal. This resets the ECU fuel trims while you work.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Locate the MAF sensor (in the middle of the tube) and the IAT sensor (near the airbox or tube). Gently lift the locking tabs and disconnect the harnesses. Use a trim tool to pop any wire loom clips attached to the intake tube.
  3. Detach the Breather Hose: Disconnect the crankcase breather hose from the factory intake tube. You may need pliers to slide the spring clamp back.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Use a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body "hat" (resonator box) and the clamp at the air filter box near the passenger fender.
  5. Remove the Resonator "Hat": Some models have a wing nut or a 10mm nut holding the resonator box onto a stud on top of the engine. Remove this if present.
  6. Pull the Assembly: Lift the intake tube assembly out of the engine bay. Note: The factory rubber boots are likely stuck from years of heat cycles—wiggle them gently to break the seal without cracking the radiator shroud.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Chevrolet C/K 1500 (1996-1999) 5.0L / 5.7L V8

  1. Transfer the Sensors: Carefully remove the MAF sensor from the factory housing. Install it into the new intake pipe using the supplied hardware and the appropriate Torx bit or Allen key. Double-check the flow direction arrow. Transfer the IAT sensor grommet and sensor if your model is equipped with a separate IAT.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Remove the factory airbox base by pulling firmly (it is held by grommets) or removing the mounting bolts with a 10mm socket. Install the new heat shield into the factory location, securing it with the provided hardware.
  3. Mount the Couplers: Slide the silicone coupler onto the throttle body. Secure it loosely with a hose clamp using a flathead screwdriver. Do not overtighten yet.
  4. Install the Intake Tube: Lower the new tube into position. connect the tube to the throttle body coupler and the filter adapter on the heat shield.
  5. Reconnect Breather & Electrical: Connect the supplied breather hose from the engine valve cover to the new intake tube. Reconnect the MAF and IAT sensor harnesses. Listen for the "click" to ensure the locks engage.
  6. Final Lockdown: Align the tube so it does not rub against the alternator, fan shroud, or coolant lines. Tighten all hose clamps firmly.
  7. The Re-Learn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the truck and let it idle for 10-15 minutes without touching the gas pedal. This allows the ECU to relearn the idle airflow for the 5.0L/5.7L Vortec engine with the increased air volume.
