Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 1996-1999 Vortec engines rely heavily on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Do not install the MAF sensor backward. There is a flow arrow stamped on the sensor housing; it must point towards the engine (throttle body). If you flip this, your 5.7L will run lean, misfire, and throw a CEL immediately. Phase 1: Removing the Restrictive Factory Vortec Intake

  7. The Re-Learn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the truck and let it idle for 10-15 minutes without touching the gas pedal. This allows the ECU to relearn the idle airflow for the 5.0L/5.7L Vortec engine with the increased air volume.
