Ultimate Performance Cold Air Intake for 2000–2006 Chevrolet V8 Series
Your Tahoe or Avalanche was built for capability—towing your family's boat to the lake, hauling gear across state lines, and powering through whatever the road throws at you. But the factory air intake system wasn't designed to maximize that legendary Chevy V8 power. It was engineered for quiet operation and cost efficiency, creating restrictions that hold your engine back when you need performance most.
This cold air intake system removes those limitations. Custom-engineered for Chevrolet's workhorse V8 engines, it replaces the restrictive factory airbox with a high-flow design that feeds your engine the massive volume of cool, oxygen-rich air it craves. The result? Sharper throttle response when merging onto highways, stronger pull when towing your trailer, and the confidence that comes from unlocking your truck's true potential.
Built for the Demands of Real-World Driving
Imagine pulling onto the interstate with a loaded bed, feeling your Tahoe surge forward with newfound authority. This intake system optimizes airflow throughout the entire power band, delivering noticeable gains where you actually drive—not just on a dyno chart. The integrated heat shield keeps intake temperatures low even during summer towing, ensuring consistent performance when engine bay temps climb.
Key Performance Advantages
- Immediate Power Gains: Experience increased horsepower and torque across the RPM range for confident passing and merging
- Enhanced Towing Capability: Optimized air-to-fuel ratio delivers the pulling power your Chevy V8 was designed to provide
- Cooler, Denser Air: Heat shield design prevents power-robbing heat soak during extended highway runs
- Improved Efficiency: Better airflow creates more complete combustion for optimized fuel economy
- Aggressive Sound: Hear that classic V8 growl you remember—refined, authoritative, and unmistakably Chevy
- Maximum Protection: High-flow filter captures harmful debris while maintaining unrestricted airflow
Complete Kit, Straightforward Installation
Everything you need is included: performance intake tube, high-flow air filter, precision-fit heat shield, plus all couplers, clamps, and mounting hardware. Before installation, disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait one minute after completion—this allows your engine computer to recalibrate for the improved airflow characteristics.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 2/10 - Beginner friendly, basic hand tools needed. This is the perfect "first mod" for the GMT800 platform.
Tools You Will Need
- Flathead Screwdriver (For hose clamps)
- 10mm Socket & Ratchet (For air box mounting bolts and battery)
- 8mm Socket (Common for the Vortec engine cover and GM side-post battery terminals)
- T20 Torx Bit (CRITICAL: Required to remove the Mass Air Flow sensor from the stock housing)
- Panel Popper or Pliers (To remove wire loom clips attached to the stock intake tube)
On these 4.8L/5.3L/6.0L Vortec engines, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is directional. Do not install it backward. There is an airflow arrow molded into the plastic sensor housing—it must point towards the engine (throttle body). If you flip it, your Avalanche will run lean, throw a CEL (P0101), and likely stall immediately. Also, be extremely careful not to touch the delicate wire bulb inside the sensor with your fingers; oils will ruin it.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Intake
- Disconnect the Battery: Start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal. On these GM trucks, this is usually an 8mm wrench for side-terminal batteries or a 10mm wrench for top-post conversions. This resets the ECU fuel trims.
- Remove the Engine Cover: Lift the front of the "Vortec" engine cover. It is typically held on by a single 8mm bolt in the center or simply snaps onto a bracket. Set it aside to expose the throttle body.
- Disconnect the Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor plug near the air box. Pull the grey safety tab back, squeeze the connector, and unplug it. Use a panel popper to pry the wire loom clip off the intake tube so the harness is free.
- Detach Breather Hose: Disconnect the crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose connected to the side of the stock intake tube. It usually pulls right off, but you may need pliers to pinch the clamp.
- Remove the Assembly: Use a Flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body and the one connecting the tube to the MAF sensor. Pull the "accordion" tube free. Finally, rock the stock air box back and forth to pull it out of its rubber grommets (some models may have mounting bolts requiring a 10mm socket).
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Chevrolet Avalanche (2000-2006)
- Transfer the MAF Sensor: This is the most critical step. Use your T20 Torx bit to remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor into the factory housing. Transfer the sensor to the new intake pipe immediately. Ensure the O-ring is seated correctly and the airflow arrow points toward the throttle body side. Secure with the provided hardware.
- Install the Heat Shield: drop the new heat shield into the truck where the factory air box sat. Press the mounting prongs firmly into the factory rubber grommets until you feel them pop into place.
- Mount the Couplers: Slide the silicone coupler onto the throttle body and secure it loosely with a hose clamp using your Flathead screwdriver. Do not tighten fully yet; you need wiggle room to align the tube.
- Install the Intake Tube: Feed the new intake tube into the heat shield first, then slide the other end into the throttle body coupler. Reconnect the crankcase vent hose to the new nipple on the pipe.
- Filter and Tighten: Install the air filter onto the end of the tube inside the heat shield. Once everything is aligned and not rubbing against the radiator fan shroud or coolant lines, tighten all hose clamps down snug. Do not overtighten or you will crack the plastic MAF housing.
- Reconnect and Relearn: Plug the MAF sensor harness back in. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the truck and let it idle for 3-5 minutes without touching the gas pedal. This allows the ECU to relearn the new idle airflow parameters for the 2000-2006 Vortec engine.
Disclaimer: This is a general guide provided for the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L). Always refer to your factory service manual for exact torque specifications and safety procedures.
