Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
On the N52/N51 engine found in the 2007-2012 BMW 3 Series 3.0L, the factory crankcase breather hose attached to the back of the intake elbow becomes extremely brittle from engine heat cycles. Squeeze the ribbed quick-release collar evenly on both sides with your fingertips—never pry it with a screwdriver or twist the hose, or the corrugated neck will snap, resulting in an unmetered vacuum leak and lean codes (P0171/P0174).

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Open the trunk and use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal to safeguard your DME and prevent stored MAF fault codes.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory intake elbow. Slide the gray locking tab back and depress the release clip with your thumb or a precision pick to disconnect the wiring harness.
  3. Remove the Fresh Air Snorkel: Using a T25 Torx driver, remove the two screws securing the front air intake duct to the top of the radiator core support, then pull the duct forward and out.
  4. Disconnect the Breather Line: Locate the rear PCV breather pipe attached to the rear of the intake boot. Squeeze the sides of the plastic quick-connect ring and gently pull it straight off the fitting.
  5. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Loosen the OEM hose clamp connecting the intake accordion tube to the throttle body using a flathead screwdriver or 6mm socket.
  6. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the two 10mm mounting bolts holding the OEM airbox to the driver-side inner fender bracket. Lift the entire airbox assembly straight up to pop the lower mounting pins free from their rubber isolator bushings.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using a T20 Torx driver, remove the two factory screws holding the MAF sensor into the OEM airbox housing. Delicately pull the sensor straight out without touching the exposed platinum wire grid. Insert the sensor into the new intake tube bung, ensuring the internal rubber O-ring seats squarely, and secure it with the provided hardware.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Position the aftermarket heat shield into the engine bay, aligning its bottom mounting prongs with the factory lower rubber chassis grommets on your 2007-2012 BMW 3 Series 3.0L. Secure the bracket using the factory 10mm bolts.
  3. Mount the Coupler & Intake Pipe: Slide the silicone intake coupler over the throttle body inlet and snug the clamp loosely using a 7mm nut driver. Insert the new intake tube into the coupler, align the PCV breather port, and reconnect the factory breather line until it audibly clicks into place.
  4. Fit the Cone Filter & Secure Clamps: Install the high-flow air filter over the end of the intake pipe inside the heat shield area. Ensure there is at least a 1/2-inch gap between the filter and any chassis metal to prevent rattle, then torque all hose clamps down firmly with an 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver.
  5. Reconnect and Initial DME Calibration: Plug the MAF wiring harness back in until the latch clicks. Reconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. Start the engine and do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 to 30 seconds; allow the engine to idle smoothly so the DME can calibrate to the increased airflow volume.
