Installation & Tools

Tools You Will Need

  • Flathead Screwdriver or Panel Popper (For the factory air scoop retaining clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The biggest headache on the E9x/E8x N52 platform is the factory Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) hose attached to the rear of the intake boot. After thousands of heat cycles, this plastic retaining ring becomes incredibly brittle. Do NOT force it. Squeeze the textured ridges firmly and wiggle it off gently. Breaking this line causes an immediate, massive vacuum leak and a rough-idle Check Engine Light (CEL). Also, remember your 3.0L is an Inline-6 (N52/N51), despite what some generic aftermarket catalogs might mislabel as a V6!

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2007-2011 BMW 1 Series 3 Series 3.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal in the trunk using a 10mm socket to prevent check engine lights when unplugging the mass airflow sensor.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory airbox. Slide the grey locking tab back, press down on the clip firmly, and pull the harness free. Tuck it safely out of the way.
  3. Remove the Air Snorkel: Use your panel popper or a flathead screwdriver to pry up the center pins of the two plastic clips holding the front air scoop to the radiator support. Pull the scoop out.
  4. Loosen the Intake Boot: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the metal hose clamp securing the factory rubber intake boot to the throttle body.
  5. Disconnect the CCV Hose: Reach behind the intake boot, locate the CCV breather hose, squeeze the ribbed plastic ring, and gently wiggle it off the intake tube.
  6. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the two 10mm bolts mounting the airbox to the driver’s side chassis rail. Grab the entire airbox assembly and pull straight up aggressively to pop it out of the lower rubber mounting grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Using your T20 Torx driver, carefully remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor in the factory housing. Gently pull the sensor out. Do not touch the internal wire element! Transfer it into your new aftermarket intake tube and secure it using the supplied hardware.
  2. Install the Heat Shield: Drop the new aftermarket heat shield into the engine bay, aligning the mounting pegs with the factory lower rubber grommets. Secure the top mounts using the provided hardware and your 10mm socket.
  3. Mount the Intake Tube & Filter: Slide the provided silicone coupler onto the throttle body and insert the new intake tube. Tighten all clamps down snugly with your 8mm socket. Attach the conical high-flow air filter to the end of the tube inside the heat shield compartment.
  4. Reconnect Lines & Harness: Push the fragile factory CCV hose onto the new intake tube’s vacuum fitting until you hear a solid click. Plug the factory wiring harness back into the MAF sensor and push the grey locking tab in.
  5. First Startup Procedure: Reconnect your negative battery terminal using the 10mm socket. Start the vehicle, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Allow the BMW ECU time to read the new airflow dynamics and properly adjust the idle trim.
