Tools You Will Need
- 10mm and 12mm sockets with a long extension and ratchet
- 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
- Panel popper tool (for removing brittle fender liner clips)
- Pliers (for spring clamps on vacuum hoses)
- Jack and jack stands (to remove the driver-side front wheel)
The Acura J32 engine platform is notorious for the massive factory resonator box buried deep inside the driver’s side front bumper. DIYers often break the surrounding plastic trying to rip it out from the top. Don’t force it. Jack up the car, pop out the fender liner clips with your panel popper, and unbolt it from the bottom. Furthermore, 20-year-old factory PCV and vacuum hoses are practically glass. Twist them gently with pliers to break the seal before pulling, or you will snap the plastic nipples right off the valve cover.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 1999-2003 Acura CL TL 3.2L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor plugged into the factory rubber intake hose. Depress the plastic tab and gently pull the harness connector away. Do not pull by the wires.
- Remove Vacuum Lines: Using pliers, squeeze the spring clamps on the breather and PCV hoses attached to the intake tube. Slide the clamps back and gently twist the hoses off.
- Extract the Upper Airbox: Use your 10mm socket to loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body. Unbolt the upper airbox housing using a 10mm socket and remove the rubber hose and upper box as one assembly.
- Defeat the Resonator Box: Safely support the vehicle on jack stands, remove the driver-side front wheel, and use your panel popper to remove the plastic clips holding the inner fender liner. Pull the liner back to expose the massive factory resonator box. Use a 10mm socket and a long extension to remove the hidden mounting bolts, then drop the resonator assembly out from the bottom.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake
- Mount the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone reducer/coupler over the factory throttle body. Secure it loosely using the provided T-bolt or worm gear clamp with an 8mm nut driver.
- Route the Intake Pipe: Carefully feed the new cold air intake pipe down through the engine bay hole where the factory lower airbox used to sit, routing the lower half into the open fender well area. Slide the upper end into your throttle body coupler.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Gently pull the fragile factory IAT sensor out of the original rubber hose. Push it firmly into the pre-drilled rubber grommet on your new aluminum intake pipe. Reconnect the factory harness.
- Reconnect Vacuum Lines: Push your factory breather and PCV hoses onto the welded nipples on the new intake pipe. Secure them using the original spring clamps and your pliers.
- Install Filter and Final Tightening: Move to the wheel well. Slide the high-flow air filter onto the bottom of the intake pipe and tighten the clamp with an 8mm nut driver. Adjust the pipe for optimal clearance against metal edges, then lock down all clamps. Reinstall your fender liner and wheel. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the new airflow parameters.
