  • Difficulty: 5/10 - Dropping the front bumper to remove the massive factory resonator box is tedious but completely necessary for this chassis.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm and 12mm deep sockets with a 6-inch extension
  • 8mm socket or nut driver (for T-bolt/worm clamps)
  • Panel popper tool (for factory push-clips)
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers (for PCV spring clamps)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The UA6/UA7 J-Series community universally hates the factory intake resonator. It’s a massive plastic labyrinth hidden behind the driver’s side front bumper. You MUST peel back the wheel well liner or drop the front bumper to get it out. Do not try to yank it out from the engine bay; you’ll snap the brittle 15-year-old plastic mounts. Furthermore, the 07-08 Type-S (J35A8) uses a MAF sensor, while the 04-06 Base (J32A3) uses an IAT sensor. Both are incredibly fragile. Never touch the exposed sensor element during transfer!

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights on your 2004-2008 Acura TL 3.2L 3.5L.
  2. Unplug the Sensor: Carefully unclip the wiring harness for the factory IAT or MAF sensor. Set the wiring pigtail aside. Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to extract the sensor from the factory rubber intake boot. Set the sensor in a completely safe area.
  3. Remove the Upper Airbox: Loosen the primary hose clamp at the throttle body using an 8mm socket. Unclip the top lid of the factory airbox, squeeze the PCV breather hose clamp with your needle-nose pliers, and pull the upper rubber intake tube completely free from the engine bay.
  4. Access the Resonator: Grab your panel popper and a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the push clips and screws along the driver’s side wheel well liner and the underside of the front bumper. Pull the liner/bumper forward to expose the hidden lower resonator box.
  5. Extract the Lower Box: Use your 10mm socket and 12mm socket on a long extension to remove the hidden bolts securing the factory resonator to the chassis. Wiggle the entire lower assembly free and remove it from the vehicle.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Acura TL Base/Type-S (2004-2008) 3.2L 3.5L Engines

  1. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slip the new silicone coupler over the bare throttle body. Secure the throttle body side using your 8mm socket to lock down the clamp, leaving the front-facing clamp loose for now.
  2. Route the Cold Air Pipe: Feed the long aluminum pipe down through the opening in the engine bay into the driver’s side fender well, right where the old resonator used to live. Slide the top end of the pipe into the silicone coupler.
  3. Transfer the Factory Sensor: Gently insert your factory IAT or MAF sensor into the new intake pipe’s pre-drilled grommet or CNC-machined flange. Secure it carefully with the supplied hardware, ensuring a vacuum-tight seal, and plug the factory wiring harness back in.
  4. Attach Breather Hose & Filter: Reconnect the factory PCV breather hose to the welded bung on your new intake pipe. Down inside the fender well, slide the high-flow air filter onto the bottom of the intake pipe and crank the clamp down tight with your 8mm socket. Reassemble your fender liner and bumper clips.
  5. Final Check & Idle Relearn: Tighten all remaining hose clamps and reconnect your negative battery terminal. Start the 2004-2008 Acura TL 3.2L 3.5L, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Allow the J-Series ECU to read the new sensor data and adjust to the increased airflow without triggering a fault code.
