Revitalize Your Classic Acura C32A: Performance Cold Air Intake for Legend & TL 3.2L V6

Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Acura Legend and TL owners running the legendary C32A engine. If you’re driving one of these classics, you know they were built with a premium feel, but if you’re like me, you also know there’s always more performance waiting to be tapped. This kit is for the enthusiast who wants to wake up their sedan and experience the C32A’s true potential.

The Problem: Back in the day, Acura designed the C32A-powered Legend and TL for refinement and quiet operation. The factory intake system, while durable, was a major bottleneck. That restrictive plastic air box and convoluted tubing choked the engine, especially when you really wanted to lean into it. The C32A struggles to pull in cool, dense air from outside the engine bay, leading to higher intake air temperatures and a noticeable flat spot when you’re trying to get maximum power. You feel that hesitation, that less-than-responsive throttle, knowing your Acura has more to give but the stock setup is holding it back.

The Solution: We engineered this cold air intake system to directly address those factory compromises. By replacing the entire restrictive OEM setup with high-flow, smooth induction piping and a premium performance air filter, we allow your C32A engine to breathe freely. This system actively draws cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay, delivering an oxygen-rich charge straight into your combustion chambers. The result isn’t just a more aggressive induction note; it’s a tangible improvement in throttle response, significant gains in horsepower and torque, and a more engaging driving experience that reminds you why you fell in love with your Legend or TL in the first place.

Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade

  • Performance Gains: Experience an instant improvement in throttle response and horsepower, with gains up to 10% across the entire RPM range. Your C32A will feel more lively, pulling harder from a dead stop and through the gears.
  • Enhanced Durability & Filtration: Features a high-flow, reusable performance air filter designed to block harmful debris while maximizing airflow. The robust induction tubing is built to withstand engine bay temperatures and vibrations, ensuring long-lasting performance.
  • Straightforward Installation: This kit is a direct bolt-on upgrade, coming complete with all necessary couplers, clamps, and hardware. We’ve made sure the installation is as simple as possible, so you can spend less time wrenching and more time enjoying your revitalized Acura.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 60-90 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 4/10 - You’ll be working in tight wheel well spaces and wrestling with 25-year-old brittle plastics, but it is a straightforward bolt-on job.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm and 12mm sockets (with a 6-inch extension)
  • 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver (for band clamps)
  • Panel popper tool (for fender liner clips)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for factory spring clamps on vacuum lines)
  • Silicone spray lubricant (crucial for sensor transfer)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
First Gen TL owners with the C32A engine know the real headache here isn’t the upper airbox—it’s the massive plastic factory resonator hiding inside the front bumper. Don’t try to force it out through the top of the engine bay. Use your panel popper to pull back the passenger-side wheel well liner and drop the resonator out the bottom. Furthermore, the factory IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor plastic will be baked and brittle. Do not twist it aggressively during removal or you will snap the probe off inside the stock intake tube.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and clear the ECU’s learned fuel trims.
  2. Disconnect the Sensors and Lines: Locate the IAT sensor on the factory intake arm. Depress the locking tab and pull the harness straight back. Next, use your needle-nose pliers to squeeze the spring clamps on the factory PCV/breather hoses connected to the intake tube. Twist the hoses slightly to break the seal, then pull them off.
  3. Remove the Upper Intake Tube: Grab your 8mm nut driver and loosen the band clamp securing the rubber intake tube to the throttle body. Loosen the clamp at the airbox side, and pull the factory rubber accordion tube out of the engine bay.
  4. Extract the Factory Airbox: Use a 10mm socket and a 6-inch extension to remove the bolts holding the upper airbox housing to the chassis. Lift the main box assembly straight up and out.
  5. Delete the Lower Resonator: Turn your steering wheel all the way to the left. Use a panel popper to remove the plastic clips holding the front passenger fender liner. Pull the liner back to expose the lower resonator box. Remove the mounting bolts with your 10mm socket and wrestle the bulky resonator down and out of the bumper cavity.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Acura TL (1996-1998) 3.2L V6 Engine

  1. Prep the Throttle Body: Wipe the throttle body lip clean with a rag. Slide the new silicone coupler over the throttle body and slide two new hose clamps over the coupler. Snug down the throttle body side slightly using your 8mm nut driver so it stays in place.
  2. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Carefully twist and pull the factory IAT sensor out of the old airbox. Spray a quick burst of silicone spray onto the rubber grommet welded into your new aluminum intake pipe. Gently push the IAT sensor straight into the new grommet until it is seated flush. Plug the factory wiring harness back into the sensor.
  3. Route the New Intake Pipe: Carefully snake the new cold air intake pipe down through the engine bay hole where the factory resonator used to sit. Slide the upper end of the pipe into the silicone coupler at the throttle body. Align the mounting bracket on the pipe with the factory airbox mounting hole on the chassis.
  4. Secure the Hardware: Thread the provided vibration-mount bolt through the bracket into the chassis using your 10mm socket. Once the pipe is perfectly positioned, tighten down both band clamps on the silicone coupler securely with your 8mm nut driver. Reattach the PCV/breather hoses to the welded fittings on the new pipe, securing them with the factory spring clamps using your needle-nose pliers.
  5. Mount the Filter and Finalize: Go back into the wheel well. Slide the high-flow conical air filter onto the bottom of the intake pipe. Tighten the filter clamp with an 8mm nut driver or flathead. Push the fender liner back into place and secure it with the factory plastic clips.
  6. ECU Relearn Procedure: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start your 1996-1998 Acura TL 3.2L, but do not touch the gas pedal. Let the vehicle idle completely untouched for 20 minutes so the ECU can read the new airflow volume and adjust the C32A fuel trims appropriately.
