Cold Air Intake System for Acura MDX 3.5L V6 (2004–2006) - Optimized Airflow & Engine Efficiency
This cold air intake system is designed to replace the factory air box on 2004–2006 Acura MDX models equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. The system reduces intake restriction by using optimized induction piping and a high-flow air filter designed to draw cooler air from outside the engine bay. This results in improved throttle response, enhanced airflow efficiency, and measurable gains in horsepower and torque across the RPM range.
The intake uses high-flow induction tubing that reduces air turbulence compared to the factory intake tract. The design positions the filter to draw cooler, denser air which contains more oxygen for improved combustion efficiency. The system improves the engine's volumetric efficiency throughout the entire RPM range.
Vehicle Fitment
- 2004–2006 Acura MDX (3.5L V6 Engine)
Performance & Design
Airflow Optimization: The system is engineered to improve airflow efficiency by eliminating restrictive elements in the factory air box assembly. The high-flow induction tubing reduces air turbulence and allows the engine to operate as a more efficient air pump. Testing under controlled conditions has shown potential performance gains of up to 10% throughout the RPM range. Actual performance improvements will vary based on vehicle condition, elevation, ambient temperature, and existing modifications.
Thermal Control: The system is designed to draw cooler air from outside the immediate engine bay area. Cooler air is denser and carries more oxygen, which contributes to more efficient combustion. This design helps maintain a denser air charge for improved power delivery, particularly beneficial during highway merging or steep climbs.
Construction & Materials
Induction Tubing Design: The intake uses high-velocity induction piping designed to reduce turbulence and maintain steady air velocity. The construction provides reliable performance during both daily commuting and extended driving conditions. The materials resist heat and vibration in the engine bay environment.
Filter Design: The high-flow performance air filter is reusable and washable. The filter blocks debris and contaminants while allowing maximum airflow to meet the demands of the 3.5L V6 engine. The open-element design produces a more audible induction sound during heavy acceleration.

Installation Note:
Disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning installation. After installation is complete, leave the battery disconnected for at least one minute to allow the engine control unit to reset and learn the new airflow parameters. This allows the ECU to recalibrate fuel delivery and ignition timing to optimize performance with the modified airflow characteristics. Ensure the engine is completely cool before performing any engine bay work. The ECU will continue to adapt during normal driving operation.
Filter Maintenance
Inspection Schedule: Inspect the air filter every 5,000 miles and clean if necessary. Driving conditions such as dusty environments, towing, off-road use, or heavy traffic may require more frequent inspection and cleaning.
Cleaning Procedure: Remove the filter from the intake tube. Gently tap the filter to remove loose debris. Apply an appropriate air filter cleaning solution to both the inside and outside of the filter element, working it into the filter media. Allow the cleaner to soak for approximately 10 minutes. Rinse the filter thoroughly with low-pressure water from the clean side out, continuing until water runs clear. Shake off excess water and allow the filter to air dry completely in a clean environment. Once fully dry, apply air filter oil evenly to the filter media according to product specifications. Allow the oil to wick through the filter material for approximately 20 minutes before reinstalling. Ensure the filter is completely dry before applying oil, as moisture will prevent proper oil absorption.
Compatibility Requirements
Engine Verification: This cold air intake system is designed specifically for 2004–2006 Acura MDX models equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. Verify your vehicle's engine size and model year before purchase to ensure proper fitment.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - A straightforward bolt-on upgrade, but requires patience dealing with the 20-year-old brittle plastics and heat-baked hoses on the J35 engine.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm socket with a 6-inch extension and ratchet
- 8mm nut driver or socket (for aftermarket worm gear clamps)
- #2 Phillips and Flathead screwdrivers
- Needle-nose pliers (for factory spring clamps)
- Panel popper tool (to safely remove plastic wire harness anchors)
The 1st Gen 2004-2006 Acura MDX J35 engine is notorious for dry-rotted rubber hoses and brittle sensors. When removing the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor from the old rubber tube, do NOT pry it with a screwdriver. Gently twist and pull straight out so you don’t snap the plastic probe. Lubricate the new grommet with a tiny drop of clean engine oil before pressing the IAT sensor into your new intake to prevent tearing.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2004-2006 Acura MDX 3.5L
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights.
- Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor plugged into the factory rubber intake hose. Depress the plastic locking tab and disconnect the wiring harness. Use a panel popper to free the harness wire tie from the airbox housing.
- Disconnect the Breather Hose: Use needle-nose pliers to compress the metal spring clamp on the crankcase PCV breather hose connected to the factory intake tube. Slide the clamp backward, give the hose a slight twist to break the seal, and pull it free.
- Loosen the Factory Clamps: Use your #2 Phillips screwdriver or a 10mm socket to loosen the large hose clamps securing the corrugated rubber intake tube to the throttle body and the airbox lid. Wiggle the rubber tube off and set it aside.
- Remove the Factory Airbox: Use a 10mm socket with a 6-inch extension to remove the lower bolts holding the bottom half of the factory airbox to the chassis. These bolts are known to rust, so apply penetrating fluid if there is heavy resistance. Lift the entire bulky airbox assembly out of the engine bay.
Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Acura MDX (2004-2006) 3.5L V6 Engine
- Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler onto the throttle body. Secure the throttle body side using an 8mm nut driver to tighten the worm gear clamp, leaving the intake-facing clamp loose for now.
- Mount the Heat Shield: Assemble the provided heat shield and drop it into the location of the old factory airbox. Bolt it down into the original mounting holes using your 10mm socket. Tighten firmly, but do not overtighten and strip the old chassis threads.
- Transfer the IAT Sensor: Carefully push the provided rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new aluminum intake pipe. Gently push the factory IAT sensor into the grommet until it is fully seated.
- Route the Intake Tube: Slide the new intake tube into the throttle body silicone coupler. Align the tube bracket to the heat shield vibration mount, then lock down all remaining worm gear clamps with your 8mm nut driver. Reconnect the IAT sensor wiring harness until it clicks.
- Connect Vacuum Lines and Filter: Attach the new silicone PCV breather hose from the valve cover port to the welded fitting on the new intake tube. Finally, slide the high-flow air filter onto the end of the intake pipe and tighten the final clamp securely. Reconnect your negative battery terminal.
- The ECU Relearn Protocol: Start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can properly calibrate its mapping to the increased airflow of your newly installed cold air intake.
