  • Difficulty: 4/10 - Removing the OEM airbox is simple, but extracting the restrictive factory resonator from the driver’s side fender well requires patience and maneuvering.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm and 8mm sockets with a 6-inch extension and ratchet
  • Panel popper (essential for safely removing plastic push-clips)
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver (for the factory MAF sensor screws)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for releasing factory breather hose spring clamps)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The K24Z7 community universally hates the factory intake resonator box buried behind the driver-side bumper. You will need to peel back the fender liner to get it out. Those 10-year-old plastic push-clips are brittle—use a panel popper, not a flathead screwdriver, or you will snap them. Secondly, the factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is incredibly fragile. Do NOT touch the exposed wire element when transferring it, or you will be buying a $150 replacement.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your 2013-2015 Acura ILX 2.4L using a 10mm wrench to prevent throwing a Check Engine Light (CEL) when unplugging sensors.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the MAF sensor on the factory airbox tube. Gently press the release tab and pull the harness connector free. Tuck the harness aside safely.
  3. Remove Breather Hoses: Use your needle-nose pliers to squeeze the metal spring clamp on the crankcase breather hose connected to the factory intake tube. Slide the clamp back and pull the hose off the nipple.
  4. Extract the Upper Airbox: Use your 8mm socket to loosen the band clamp where the rubber intake tube meets the throttle body. Unclip the metal latches on the upper airbox lid and pull the entire upper assembly out of the engine bay.
  5. Yank the Lower Box and Resonator: Use a 10mm socket and extension to remove the bolts holding the lower airbox housing and lift it out. Next, use your panel popper to carefully remove the front driver-side wheel well clips. Peel back the liner, locate the massive hidden resonator box, remove its mounting 10mm bolts, and wrestle it out of the fender. Ditching this box is the secret to finally hearing that K-series VTEC crossover.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Acura ILX (2013-2015) 2.4L Engine - Blue

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully unscrew the MAF sensor from the factory housing using a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Pull it straight out without touching the sensor element. Insert it into the new blue intake pipe and secure it using the supplied hardware. Tighten snugly, but do not overtighten to avoid cracking the plastic.
  2. Install the Silicone Coupler: Slide the provided silicone coupler over the 2013-2015 Acura ILX 2.4L throttle body. Tighten the throttle body side clamp using an 8mm socket, but leave the outside clamp loose to allow for pipe adjustment.
  3. Route the Blue Intake Pipe: Carefully feed the lower section of the new blue cold air intake pipe down into the fender cavity where the factory resonator used to sit. Guide the upper end into the throttle body coupler. Secure the pipe bracket to the chassis using the supplied rubber vibration mount and a 10mm wrench.
  4. Mount the High-Flow Filter: From underneath the car inside the peeled-back wheel well, slide the new cone filter onto the bottom of the blue intake pipe. Position it so it doesn’t rub against the chassis metal or bumper cover, then lock it down tight with your 8mm socket. Push your fender liner back into place and secure it with the factory clips.
  5. Reconnect Hoses and Harness: Push the factory crankcase breather hose onto the welded nipple on the new intake pipe. Reconnect the MAF sensor harness until it securely clicks into place. Finally, lock down your negative battery terminal.
  6. The ECU Relearn Protocol: Start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the vehicle idle so the ECU can properly adjust to the newly increased airflow and recalibrate its fuel trims without throwing a code.
