The 3rd Gen 5.9L Common Rail Cummins is infamous for brittle IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensors. After years of under-hood heat cycling, the plastic retaining clips become extremely fragile. Do not just yank on the wiring harness. Use a small flathead to gently release the locking tab, and extract the sensor with a slight twisting motion. If you snap it, you’ll be stuck in limp mode. Ripping out the restrictive factory airbox is heavily recommended on the Cummins forums to drop EGTs (Exhaust Gas Temperatures) while towing and to let the turbo spool freely.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
