Maximize Induction Efficiency for the Nissan GT-R R35 VR38DETT
Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Nissan GT-R owners running the legendary VR38DETT engine who demand competition-level aspiration.
The Problem: The VR38DETT is essentially a high-pressure air pump. Stock paper filters are designed for service longevity and noise suppression, not maximum volumetric efficiency. At high RPM and increased boost levels, standard filters can create a significant pressure drop in the intake tract, leading to slower turbo spool and unnecessary heat soak within the airbox.
The Solution: We utilize the BMC Carbon Racing Filter (CRF) to bridge the gap between street drivability and track performance. By using a 100% carbon fiber support structure, this filter eliminates the structural flex and distortion common in rubber-rimmed filters under heavy suction. This maintains a constant air-box pressure, ensuring your turbos have immediate access to the high-velocity air they require.
Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade
- Formula 1 Pedigree: Developed by the same BMC Racing division responsible for F1 and MotoGP aspiration systems, bringing world-class flow dynamics to your R35.
- Carbon Fiber Integrity: The 100% carbon fiber frame is engineered to withstand extreme engine bay temperatures and vibrations without deforming, protecting your engine from unfiltered bypass.
- Sustainable Performance: Unlike disposable OEM filters, the CRF media is fully washable and rechargeable, maintaining its high-flow characteristics for the life of the vehicle.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 2 to 3 Hours
- Difficulty: 6/10 - Mechanically straightforward, but pulling the front bumper is tedious and requires patience to avoid damaging clips.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm Socket, Ratchet & Extension
- 8mm Socket or Nut Driver
- T30 Torx Bit
- #2 Phillips Screwdriver
- Plastic Panel Popper Tool
- Painter’s Tape
The biggest headache on the 2009-2018 Nissan GT-R (whether you have a CBA, DBA, or EBA chassis) is that you must remove the front fascia to access the factory airboxes properly. Do not rush this! Apply painter’s tape to the edges where the front bumper meets the fenders to prevent scratching Godzilla’s paint when dropping the bumper. Also, the factory MAF sensor screws strip incredibly easily—make sure your Phillips screwdriver seats perfectly before twisting.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part
- Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and protect your vehicle’s ECU.
- Tape and Prep: Apply painter’s tape liberally along the front fender seams. Lay down a blanket or cardboard in front of the car to set the bumper on once removed.
- Drop the Front Fascia: Use your panel popper to remove the top radiator shroud clips. Underneath the car and inside the wheel wells, use your 10mm socket and T30 Torx bit to remove the belly pan and bumper retaining bolts. Carefully unplug the side markers and pull the bumper straight off.
- Unplug the MAF Sensors: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensors on the OEM intake tubes. Depress the plastic locking tabs and carefully slide the harnesses off. Never pull by the wires.
- Extract the Factory Airboxes: Loosen the hose clamps at the turbo inlets using an 8mm socket. Remove the factory mounting bolts holding the airboxes to the chassis with your 10mm socket, then completely remove the restrictive OEM assemblies.
Phase 2: Installing the Carbon Racing Cold Air Intake Kit
- Transfer the MAF Sensors: Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, carefully remove the factory MAF sensors. Do not touch the delicate internal wires or drop the sensor. Insert them into your new carbon intake tubes and tighten the supplied hardware snugly.
- Mount the Carbon Tubes: Slide the provided silicone couplers over your factory turbo inlets and secure them loosely. Insert the Carbon Racing intake tubes into the couplers. Leave the clamps loose to allow for adjustment.
- Install the Filters & Tighten Down: Slide the high-flow air filters onto the ends of the carbon tubes. Position everything so it clears the crash bar and fender liners without rubbing. Once aligned, tighten all hose clamps securely with your 8mm socket.
- Reinstall the Front Fascia: Carefully lift the front bumper back into place. Reconnect your side markers, and secure all your T30 Torx bolts, 10mm hardware, and push-clips using your panel popper. Remove the painter’s tape.
- Calibrate the ECU: Reconnect your negative battery terminal with the 10mm wrench. Turn the ignition on and start the vehicle. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds on the first startup. Let the car idle so the ECU can learn the increased airflow dynamics of the new intake.
Disclaimer: This is a general guide provided for the 2009-2018 Nissan GT-R. Always refer to your factory service manual for exact torque specifications and safety procedures. Depending on the diameter of your specific aftermarket intake, custom ECU tuning (MAF scaling) may be required for safe operation.
