Tools You Will Need

  • T15 Torx driver (Factory MAF sensor screws)
  • Flathead screwdriver or panel popper (Plastic retaining push-pins)
  • Phillips head screwdriver (Aftermarket heat shield assembly)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The notorious K2XX PCV breather lines are your biggest enemy here. On the L83 and L86 engines, the hard plastic crankcase breather tubes connect to the intake tube with grey or white locking clips. Heat cycling makes these incredibly brittle. Do not force them! Gently push the lock tab inward and wiggle the line off. If you snap the tab, you’ve got an instant vacuum leak, a rough idle, and a trip to the parts counter. Additionally, when transferring the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, never touch the exposed wire element.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your 2014-2019 GMC Sierra 5.3L 6.2L using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow sensor on the factory airbox. Slide the red locking tab back, then press the black release to unplug the harness. Remove the two factory screws using a T15 Torx driver and carefully pull the sensor out. Place it somewhere safe and clean.
  3. Release the Breather Lines: Locate the hard plastic PCV breather lines attached to the factory intake tube. Carefully depress the locking tabs and pull them straight off the ports to avoid snapping the brittle clips.
  4. Loosen the Hose Clamps: Use an 8mm nut driver to loosen the hose clamps securing the bulky factory intake tube to the throttle body and the airbox.
  5. Extract the Factory Intake: Wiggle the factory resonator and intake tube free from the throttle body and lift it out of the engine bay. Remove the factory airbox by unbolting the mounting hardware with a 10mm socket and pulling upward to pop it out of the lower rubber mounting grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit for GMC Sierra 1500 (2014-2019) with 5.3L / 6.2L V8 Engine Blue

  1. Assemble and Install the Heat Shield: Assemble your new intake heat shield using the supplied hardware and a Phillips head screwdriver. Drop it into the engine bay, seating the pegs into the factory lower rubber grommets, and secure it using the original hardware and your 10mm socket.
  2. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully install your factory MAF sensor into the new blue intake tube using the supplied screws and a Phillips head screwdriver or Allen key (depending on supplied hardware). Ensure the sensor is oriented in the correct direction of airflow. Do not overtighten and crack the plastic housing.
  3. Seat the Couplers and Tube: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new air filter adapter. Slip the hose clamps over the couplers but leave them loose. Insert the new blue intake tube into the couplers.
  4. Connect Lines and Tighten: Reconnect the PCV breather lines to the new aluminum fittings on the intake tube until you hear a distinct click. Position the blue tube for best fitment and tighten all hose clamps securely with an 8mm nut driver. Plug the MAF sensor harness back in and press the red locking tab down.
  5. Final Check and Startup: Reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. When performing the first startup on your 2014-2019 GMC Sierra 5.3L 6.2L, do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. This allows the ECU to recalibrate to the increased airflow without throwing a lean code.
