Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The F-150 forum community knows the Gen 1 Coyote 5.0L runs hot under the hood. The factory PCV and EVAP breather lines connect to the intake tube using plastic quick-disconnects with gray and green locking tabs. After years of heat cycles, these bake and become incredibly brittle. Do not pry them with a flathead screwdriver! Gently squeeze the tabs with your fingers, push in slightly, wiggle, and pull. If they fight you, spray a little silicone lube to help them release so you don’t end up buying a $50 replacement harness from Ford.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights while we unplug engine sensors.
  2. Remove the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the factory airbox lid. Unplug the grey harness connector. Use a T20 Torx bit to remove the two factory screws. Carefully pull the sensor straight up and out. Place it in a safe, clean spot. Do not touch the delicate internal wire!
  3. Disconnect the Breather Lines: Locate the two hoses attached to the factory intake tube. Squeeze the quick-release tabs firmly with your fingers and pull them straight off the nipples. Tie them back out of the way.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Grab your 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver and loosen the hose clamps at the throttle body and the airbox lid. Wriggle the factory intake tube free and remove it.
  5. Pull the Factory Airbox: Use your panel popper tool to pop out the plastic push-pins holding the factory air scoop to the radiator core support. Remove the single 13mm bolt securing the lower airbox to the inner fender, then lift the entire factory assembly out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Ford F-150 (2011-2014) 5.0L V8 Engine Blue

  1. Assemble the Heat Shield: Put together the new aftermarket heat shield and press on the supplied rubber edge trim. Drop the assembly into the engine bay where the factory airbox sat and secure it to the fender well using your 13mm socket and the factory bolt.
  2. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully insert your factory MAF sensor into the new blue intake tube. Secure it using the supplied aftermarket hardware (usually Allen head bolts). Tighten them until snug—do not overtighten or you will crack the plastic mounting flange.
  3. Install the Couplers: Slide the provided silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new heat shield pass-through. Slide the loose hose clamps over them, but don’t tighten them down just yet.
  4. Position the Intake Tube: Drop the new blue intake tube into the silicone couplers. Reconnect the factory EVAP and PCV breather lines to the new aluminum or plastic fittings on the tube. Push them on firmly until you hear a definitive click.
  5. Lock it Down and Relearn: Adjust the tube for proper clearance away from coolant hoses, then lock down all hose clamps using your 8mm socket. Reconnect the MAF sensor harness. Reconnect the battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. On the first startup, the vehicle gas pedal should not be touched for a 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the new airflow volume.
