Maximize Volumetric Efficiency in Your Ferrari 458 Italia F136 V8
Who It’s For: Designed specifically for Ferrari 458 Italia owners running the high-revving F136 FB engine who demand peak induction performance during high-RPM spirited driving or competitive track use.
The Problem: The F136 V8 is a masterpiece of engineering, but it requires an immense volume of air to reach its 9,000 RPM redline. Factory paper filters are designed for service longevity and noise suppression, which often results in intake restriction. Furthermore, standard plastic filter frames can suffer from slight deformation under the extreme heat and vacuum pressures found in the 458’s mid-engine compartment.
The Solution: We utilize the BMC Carbon Racing Filter (CRF) to correct these flow limitations. By replacing the bulky factory units with a 100% carbon fiber support structure and high-flow cotton media, we ensure the F136 FB maintains constant air-box pressure. This kit was engineered by BMC’s racing division—the same minds behind F1 and MotoGP systems—to provide a rigid, heat-resistant housing that won’t flex, ensuring a perfect seal and maximum oxygen density.
Why This is the Ultimate Upgrade
- Optimized Flow Dynamics: The CRF design uses a specific geometry to accelerate air velocity into the intake manifolds, helping the engine breathe more freely at the top of the power band.
- Full Carbon Fiber Construction: The 100% carbon fiber frame isn’t just for looks; it provides superior structural integrity against engine bay heat soak compared to standard polyurethane or plastic filters.
- Race-Spec Filtration: Utilizing multi-layered cotton gauze treated with low-viscosity oil, this filter captures smaller impurities than OEM paper without the restrictive pressure drop.

Installation & Tools
Installation & Tools
The Wrench Time
- Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
- Difficulty: 3/10 - Straightforward bolt-on installation requiring patience with carbon fiber surfaces and delicate electrical connectors.
Tools You Will Need
- 10mm socket and ratchet (for battery quick-disconnect/ground terminal)
- T25 Torx driver (for MAF sensor retention screws and airbox cover hardware)
- T30 Torx driver (for rear engine bay bracketry)
- 7mm & 8mm nut drivers or flat-blade screwdriver (for silicone coupler hose clamps)
- Non-marring plastic panel popper (for delicate harness clips)
- Microfiber fender cover (to protect the rear quarter panels and engine bay paintwork)
Carbon fiber intake necks will crush and crack if over-torqued. Never use an electric impact on intake hose clamps or Torx screws. Tighten the hose clamps with a hand-driven 7mm nut driver until snug plus a quarter turn. Additionally, the dual Bosch MAF sensor harness plugs have brittle sliding lock tabs—slide the yellow safety latch back gently with a panel popper before depressing the release tab to avoid snapping the connector body.
Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part on the 2010-2014 Ferrari 458
- Disconnect the Battery: Locate the master quick-disconnect or negative battery terminal in the front passenger footwell and disconnect it using a 10mm wrench to prevent ECU faults and safeguard the electrical system.
- Protect the Workspace: Place a clean microfiber blanket or fender cover across the rear glass and engine decklid surround to prevent accidental tool scratches on the Ferrari’s rear quarters.
- Disconnect the Dual MAF Sensors: Carefully slide back the yellow locking tabs on both the left-hand and right-hand Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harnesses, press down on the release clip, and disconnect the electrical plugs by hand.
- Loosen Intake Coupler Clamps: Using an 8mm nut driver or flat-blade screwdriver, loosen the hose clamps securing the factory intake boots to the dual throttle bodies and the lower air feed channels.
- Extract the Factory Airbox and Filters: Using a T25 Torx driver, remove the perimeter screws securing the OEM airbox housing. Carefully lift the upper airbox assembly clear of the engine bay, then lift out the factory paper filter elements, ensuring no trapped debris falls into the exposed intake runners.
Phase 2: Installing the Air Intake Carbon Racing Filter
- Transfer the MAF Sensors: Using a T25 Torx driver, remove the dual factory Bosch MAF sensors from the OEM housings. Carefully transfer them into the designated ports on your new carbon intake assembly, ensuring the O-ring seals seat flush without pinching. Tighten the retaining screws by hand until snug.
- Seat the Carbon Racing Filters: Place the high-flow racing filter elements into the lower air duct trays, confirming that the rubber sealing perimeters sit completely flat against the factory air guide channels.
- Mount and Align the Carbon Assembly: Position the Air Intake Carbon Racing Filter housing into the 2010-2014 Ferrari 458 engine bay. Align the intake necks with the throttle body silicone couplers. Secure the housing mounting points with a T25 Torx driver, tightening in a cross-pattern to distribute load evenly across the carbon weave.
- Torque the Hose Clamps: Slide the silicone couplers over the carbon intake inlet necks. Using a 7mm nut driver, hand-tighten the worm gear clamps until firmly gripping the silicone. Do not overtighten to avoid stressing the composite material.
- Reconnect Harnesses and Battery: Reconnect the dual MAF electrical connectors, pushing until you hear a distinct click, and slide the yellow safety locks forward into place. Reconnect the battery terminal using your 10mm wrench.
- ECU Adaption Startup: Turn the ignition to the "ON" position and wait 10 seconds. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Allow the dual Motronic ECUs to read the updated airflow dynamics and stabilize idle trim tables before driving.
