High-Flow Stainless Steel Exhaust Header for 1975-1980 Toyota Celica, Pickup (20R / RA/RN)

What it Does: Replaces the restrictive factory cast-iron exhaust manifold with a high-velocity shorty header to reduce backpressure and improve exhaust scavenging on the Toyota 20R engine.

The Stock Celica & Pickup Exhaust Bottleneck

The factory-installed cast-iron manifold on the 2.2L 20R engine was designed for mass production, not gas-flow efficiency. These "log-style" manifolds create significant internal turbulence, as exhaust pulses from the four cylinders are forced into a narrow chamber simultaneously, leading to high backpressure. Over decades of service, these cast units are also prone to thermal stress cracking and flange warping, which results in persistent exhaust leaks that kill low-end torque. The rough internal casting further inhibits the engine's ability to evacuate spent gases quickly, effectively choking the 20R’s volumetric efficiency.

The Engineering Solution

This shorty header is engineered to solve these flow restrictions using mandrel-bent 1.5-inch primary tubes and a 2.5-inch collector. Constructed from high-grade stainless steel with a polished finish, it provides superior corrosion resistance compared to OEM iron. The CNC-machined flanges are TIG and MIG welded to ensure a warp-resistant, airtight seal against the cylinder head. By streamlining the path of exhaust gases, this header improves the scavenging effect—using the velocity of one exhaust pulse to help pull the next one out of the combustion chamber. This results in sharper throttle response and improved thermal management within the engine bay.
