The universally agreed-upon forum headache for the J32 platform is the massive factory resonator box hidden deep inside the lower driver-side fender well. Don’t try to force it out from the top of the engine bay. Jack up the front-left corner, turn the wheel inward, use a panel popper on the brittle fender liner clips, and unbolt the 10mm bolts from the wheel well. Also, the factory Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is pressed into the old rubber intake arm—the plastic gets extremely brittle with age, so twist and pull it out delicately to avoid snapping it.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2001-2003 Acura CL 3.2L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
  2. Disconnect the IAT Sensor and Breather Lines: Locate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor plugged into the factory rubber J32 intake arm. Delicately wiggle it free—never pull by the wires.   4. Install the Filter and Finalize: From inside the wheel well, slide the new conical air filter onto the bottom of the intake pipe. Tighten the filter clamp with your 8mm socket. Fully tighten all upper clamps. Re-install your fender liner clips and ensure the aluminum pipe isn’t rubbing against the bare metal of the chassis opening.
