Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The CD2 chassis (Escape/Tribute/Mariner) with the Duratec 30 V6 is notorious for brittle PCV fresh air hoses that snap when you look at them wrong. The factory accordion intake tube also dry-rots and hides vacuum leaks. When removing the factory intake, do not force the PCV connection. Push the release tab firmly and pull straight off. Furthermore, the lower airbox mounting pegs seize inside their rubber grommets over time. Pulling too hard will crack the plastic housing—use silicone spray to free them up.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2005-2008 Mercury Mariner 3.0L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset.
  2. Remove the MAF Sensor: Unplug the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harness. Remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor to the factory airbox using a T20 Torx driver. Carefully pull the sensor straight out and set it aside in a clean, safe location. Do not drop it or touch the fragile wire element.
  3. Loosen the Intake Tube: Loosen the factory hose clamps securing the rubber accordion tube to the throttle body and the airbox using an 8mm socket and a 1/4-inch drive ratchet.
  4. Disconnect the PCV Breather: Disconnect the PCV fresh air hose from the side of the factory intake tube. Depress the plastic locking tab with your thumb and pull it straight off to avoid snapping the brittle neck.
  5. Remove the Factory Airbox: Unclip the upper airbox lid and remove it along with the factory filter. To remove the lower airbox tray, spray silicone lubricant onto the three rubber mounting grommets at the base, then pull the tray firmly straight up to pop it out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mercury Mariner (2005-2008) 3.0L V6 Engine

  1. Install the Heat Shield: Assemble the new heat shield (if applicable to your kit) and drop it into the factory mounting locations. Secure it by pressing the mounting pegs firmly into the OEM rubber grommets, using your 10mm socket to tighten any supplied bracket bolts.
  2. Mount the Silicone Couplers: Slide the silicone couplers onto the throttle body and the new intake tube. Slip the provided hose clamps loosely over the couplers. Slide the new Cold Air Intake tube into position between the throttle body and the heat shield.
  3. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Insert the factory MAF sensor into the precision-machined slot on the new intake pipe. Secure it into place using the supplied hardware and a 3mm Allen wrench. Reconnect the factory MAF wiring harness until it clicks.
  4. Reconnect the Breather Hose: Push the factory PCV breather hose onto the new intake tube’s vacuum port until it locks into place. A secure fit here is critical to avoid the dreaded P0171/P0174 lean codes common on the 3.0L V6.
  5. Tighten and Relearn: Align the intake tube to ensure it isn’t rubbing against any hoses or the hood. Tighten down all hose clamps snugly with your 8mm socket. Install the new high-flow air filter onto the end of the tube and tighten its clamp. Finally, reconnect the negative battery terminal using your 10mm wrench. On the first startup, let the engine idle; do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds until the ECU adjusts to the increased airflow.
