Installation

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Straightforward bolt-on installation requiring basic hand tools and patience with factory plastic clips.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm socket and ratchet (with 6-inch extension)
  • 10mm open-end wrench
  • 8mm nut driver or socket (for intake hose clamps)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Automotive panel popper tool
  • Slip-joint pliers (for factory spring clamps)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor on 1996-1998 Honda Civic 1.6L (D-series) engines is housed in brittle, heat-cycled plastic. Do not pry against the sensor body with metal tools. Apply a dab of silicone spray or soapy water to the rubber grommet, push the locking tab gently, and twist the sensor out smoothly to avoid snapping the housing. Additionally, take care when unbolting the heavy OEM resonator box hidden inside the fender well.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent short circuits and reset base fuel trim memory.
  2. Disconnect Sensors and Hoses: Carefully depress the connector tab and unplug the 2-pin Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor wiring harness. Using slip-joint pliers, squeeze the factory spring clamp and slide the valve cover breather hose off the OEM intake tube.
  3. Remove the Factory Intake Arm: Loosen the hose clamp securing the intake tube to the throttle body using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver. Unclamp the air filter housing lid clips by hand and pull the upper intake tube and airbox cover out of the engine bay.
  4. Remove the OEM Airbox Base: Use a 10mm socket with an extension to remove the mounting bolts holding the lower airbox housing to the chassis bracket, then lift the lower box out.
  5. Drop the Lower Resonator Box: Turn the steering wheel fully to lock or raise the front corner. Use a panel popper tool to remove the inner splash guard clips inside the wheel liner. Peel back the liner, locate the lower intake resonator box, and unbolt it using a 10mm socket to free up the fender well passage for your new cold air routing.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for 1996-1998 Honda Civic 1.6L

  1. Mount Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the silicone coupler onto the throttle body inlet. Secure the throttle body side loosely using an 8mm nut driver, leaving enough play for pipe alignment.
  2. Route the Intake Pipe: Carefully guide the polished intake pipe down through the factory fender well opening. Align the upper inlet into the silicone coupler on the throttle body. Secure the intake pipe’s vibration-mount bracket to the existing chassis threaded hole using the supplied hardware and a 10mm socket.
  3. Transfer and Seat the IAT Sensor: Insert the provided rubber grommet into the pre-drilled bung on the intake pipe. Carefully push the OEM IAT sensor into the grommet until fully seated, then reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks. Connect the provided silicone breather hose from the valve cover vent to the intake pipe barb.
  4. Install the High-Flow Air Filter: Working from under the fender liner, slide the conical air filter onto the lower end of the intake pipe. Align the filter away from sharp sheet metal edges and tighten the clamp firmly using an 8mm nut driver. Reattach the fender liner using the factory push clips.
  5. Final Check & ECU Idle Learn: Double-check all clamp tightness with an 8mm nut driver. Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench. Start the engine, but do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20-30 seconds; allow the engine to idle smoothly so the ECU can adapt to the increased airflow without triggering a hunt or surge.
