Factory E36 cooling systems rely heavily on composite plastic end tanks crimped onto an aluminum core. Over repeated thermal cycles and high coolant operating pressures, these factory tanks embrittle, crack at the inlet and outlet necks, and separate at the gasket seams. On high-revving M42 and M44 four-cylinder engines, even momentary coolant loss leads to rapid head gasket failure and warped cylinder heads. Furthermore, aged single-row stock cores are prone to internal calcification and restricted flow.
