High-Efficiency Bar-and-Plate Top-Mount Intercooler for 2008-2009 Subaru Legacy (BL/BP)

What it Does: The Upgraded Top-Mount Intercooler replaces the restrictive factory charge air cooler on the 2008-2009 Legacy GT to lower intake air temperatures and maintain stable manifold boost pressure.

The Stock Subaru Legacy Heat Soak and End-Tank Failure

The OEM intercooler on the BL/BP chassis utilizes a lightweight tube-and-fin core mated to crimped plastic end tanks. Under increased boost or aggressive driving, these crimped seams frequently separate, leading to boost leaks and erratic AFR readings. Additionally, the thin core lacks adequate thermal mass, resulting in rapid heat soak from the EJ255 turbocharger and engine block, which spikes charge air temperatures and causes the ECU to pull ignition timing.

The Engineering Solution

This upgraded unit features a dense, high-flow bar-and-plate all-aluminum core engineered to withstand up to 430 horsepower without structural degradation. TIG-welded cast aluminum end tanks eliminate OEM crimp failures entirely while optimizing airflow across the core face. The increased core thickness dramatically improves thermal dissipation and reduces pressure drop, while the heat-dispersing black finish facilitates radiant cooling. It features an integrated blow-off valve flange designed to accept the factory bypass valve or aftermarket OE-pattern valves without modification.
