High-Amp 250A Alternator for 1998-2002 Pontiac Firebird (F-Body)
What it Does: The 250-amp alternator replaces the low-output factory charging unit on the 1998-2002 Firebird to eliminate idle voltage drop and maintain clean 14.4-volt rail current for high-demand electrical components.
The Stock Pontiac Firebird Charging Limitations
Factory F-Body charging systems rely on a standard 102-to-105-amp Delco alternator. When subjected to prolonged heat soak down in the low-mounted LS1 accessory bracket, factory rectifiers fail and diodes overheat. Upgraded electric radiator fans, secondary fuel pumps, higher-draw ignition coils, and auxiliary audio equipment cause system voltage to sag below 12 volts at idle, causing sluggish starter response, misfires, and headlight flicker.
The Engineering Solution
Engineered and manufactured in the USA, this direct-fit 250-amp unit addresses thermal breakdown through upgraded copper rotor windings, low-resistance hairpin stators, and heavy-duty internal bridge rectifiers. It delivers up to 140 amps at engine idle speeds and a continuous 250 peak amps at operating RPM. It bolts straight to factory engine mount locations, providing a direct replacement for failure-prone OEM numbers like 10464407, 10480308, and 10480342 without requiring bracket modification.
