High-Output 250-Amp Alternator for 1997-1998 Dodge Dakota (AN)
What it Does: The 250-Amp High-Output Alternator replaces the low-output factory charging unit on 1997-1998 Dodge Dakota trucks to stabilize operating voltage under heavy auxiliary electrical loads.
The Stock Dodge Dakota Charging Limitations
Factory alternators on the second-generation AN Dakota platform produce between 90 and 136 amps from the factory, generating less than 65 amps at curb idle. When modern accessories such as high-draw winches, auxiliary LED light bars, snow plows, or aftermarket audio systems are introduced, the factory unit suffers from severe thermal saturation. This leads to continuous battery discharge, severe system voltage drop under 12V, flickering headlights, and premature diode bridge failure caused by sustained duty cycles exceeding factory capacity.
The Engineering Solution
Engineered for high current delivery, this direct-mount 250-amp charging unit features heavy-gauge copper stator windings, dual internal cooling fans, and high-efficiency press-fit rectifiers engineered to dissipate heat rapidly. Designed specifically for the Magnum 3.9L V6 and Magnum 5.2L V8 powerplants, it yields massive amperage gains at low RPMs to maintain a steady 14.4-volt charge profile under full accessory draw, replacing aging factory units numbered 56027913 and 56041394.

Frequently Asked Questions & Fitment Warnings
Does this fit the AN Dakota?
Yes, this is a direct bolt-in fit for the 1997-1998 Dodge Dakota equipped with the Magnum 3.9L or Magnum 5.2L engines; it does not fit the 2.5L 4-cylinder base engine configuration.
Do I need to upgrade my main charging cables?
Yes, installing a high-gauge fused 1/0 or 4-gauge battery charge lead (Big 3 upgrade) is mandatory to safely transport 250 amps without overheating the stock wiring harness.
The Dodge Truck Standard
Built to handle severe workloads, utility towing, and demanding overland conditions, this high-output upgrade delivers consistent electrical stability without voltage drops across harsh job-site operations.
