High-Output 220-Amp Alternator for 1997-1999 Acura CL (YA3)
What it Does: The High Output 220-Amp Alternator upgrades the factory charging system on the 1997-1999 Acura CL to provide stable system voltage and eliminate severe amperage drops under high-demand electrical loads.
The Stock Acura CL Electrical Limitation
Factory alternators on the YA3 chassis paired with the J30A1 engine produce roughly 90 to 105 amps from the factory. When introducing aftermarket audio setups, high-draw cooling fans, or auxiliary electronics, the factory internal rectifier and small-gauge stator windings quickly heat-soak. This thermal saturation induces internal resistance, causing voltage to plummet below 12.5V at idle, generating headlight flicker, erratic idle, and premature battery failure.
The Engineering Solution
Engineered for high current density, this heavy-duty 220-amp unit features precision heavy-gauge copper windings and high-temperature avalanche diodes housed within an enhanced aluminum heat sink assembly. The rotor and stator geometry is optimized to yield maximum output even at low engine RPM, stabilizing system voltage at a solid 14.2V–14.6V under full load. Designed as a direct bolt-in replacement, it interfaces seamlessly with OEM brackets and replaces factory parts including 31100-P8C-A02 and 8220N.

Frequently Asked Questions & Fitment Warnings
Does this fit the YA3 CL?
Yes, this is a direct fit for the 1997-1999 Acura CL equipped with the J30A1 3.0L V6 engine. Does not fit 2.2L (F22B1) or 2.3L (F23A1) 4-cylinder CL models.
Do I need to upgrade my main battery wiring?
A Big-3 wire upgrade using fused 4-gauge or 1/0-gauge cable from the alternator positive post to the battery is strongly recommended to support 220-amp throughput without resistance.
