The Stock 22RE Exhaust Bottleneck

The factory cast-iron exhaust manifold on the N80/N90 Pickup and N130 4Runner was engineered for mass production and basic emissions compliance, not performance. Over decades of extreme heat cycling, these OEM cast manifolds are notorious for warping, blowing out gaskets, cracking between runners, and suffering from severe heat soak. Furthermore, the internal casting flash and abrupt geometric transitions create significant exhaust turbulence and backpressure. This inherent restriction chokes the 2.4L engine, notably suffocating top-end horsepower and limiting throttle response when operating at higher engine speeds.

The Engineering Solution

This long-tube spec exhaust header eliminates factory restrictions by utilizing 16-gauge wall steel piping with computerized mandrel-bends. By transitioning from a 1-1/2" OD inlet to a 2-1/4" OD outlet, the manifold maximizes exhaust gas velocity and promotes efficient cylinder scavenging. The smooth inner walls drastically reduce aerodynamic drag inside the primary tubes, translating directly into enhanced top-end horsepower and torque. Structural integrity is heavily reinforced through precision TIG welding and a robust, CNC-machined 10mm thick header flange that actively resists the thermal warping prevalent in OEM units.
