Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The M112 V6 engine inside your 1998-2002 Mercedes Benz M-Class 3.2L uses a massive factory engine cover that doubles as the airbox. Underneath this cover are extremely brittle PCV breather hoses. If you blindly yank the cover off its rubber mounts, you will snap these hoses. Lift gently, reach underneath, and disconnect the breathers first. Furthermore, never touch the exposed element of the MAF sensor with your bare hands, as the oils on your skin will ruin it and throw a check engine light.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal on your 1998-2002 Mercedes Benz M-Class 3.2L using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and electrical shorts.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor at the back of the engine cover, near the firewall. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently depress the locking tab on the harness and pull the plug free. Tuck the wiring safely out of the way.
  3. Loosen the Intake Clamps: Take your 8mm nut driver and loosen the hose clamp securing the rear of the factory airbox to the throttle body inlet tube.
  4. Extract the Factory Airbox: Grab the front edges of the large plastic engine cover/airbox. Pull up firmly but carefully to release it from the front rubber grommets. Stop immediately. Reach underneath to disconnect the rubber PCV breather hose. Once detached, lift the entire assembly off the remaining rear grommets and remove it from the engine bay.
  5. Remove the MAF Sensor Housing: Using your T25 Torx driver, remove the factory screws holding the MAF sensor into the factory housing. Slide the sensor out smoothly and set it on a clean shop towel.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mercedes-Benz ML320 (1998-2003) 3.2L Engine

  1. Transfer the Factory MAF: Insert the MAF sensor into your new aftermarket intake pipe. Secure it down using the supplied hardware and your T25 Torx driver. Ensure the sensor is facing the correct direction for airflow and do not touch the internal wire element.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new metal heat shield into the W163 engine bay where the factory airbox sat. Thread the supplied bolts into the factory mounting locations and tighten them down with your 10mm socket.
  3. Route the New Intake Pipe: Slide the silicone coupler over the throttle body and push the new intake pipe into the coupler. Reattach the factory breather hose to the designated nipple on the side of the new pipe. Use your 8mm nut driver to snug down the clamps on both ends of the silicone coupler.
  4. Install the Filter and Reconnect: Slide the high-flow air filter onto the end of the intake pipe inside the heat shield. Tighten the filter clamp firmly with your 8mm nut driver. Finally, plug the MAF harness back in until you hear a distinct click.
  5. Perform the Adaptation Startup: Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten it with your 10mm wrench. Turn the key and start the engine. Do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. This allows the ECU to adjust to the increased airflow without triggering a check engine light.
