How to Install Extended Wheel Studs on an Infiniti G37

Installing extended wheel studs is a mandatory safety requirement if you are running slip-on wheel spacers or thicker aftermarket wheels that prevent full lug nut thread engagement.

The Short Answer (TL;DR)

Replacing wheel studs on an Infiniti G37 takes about 2 to 3 hours. The front studs can be hammered out and replaced without removing the brake caliper or rotor by aligning the hub opening. The rear requires removing the caliper and rotor. Upgrading suspension and brake components while the wheels are off is highly recommended.

The DIY Process Overview

To complete this job safely, you need a jack, jack stands, a standard hammer, a magnetic bolt retriever, an open-ended lug nut, and a stud installation tool. For the front hub, rotate the assembly until the back of the factory stud lines up with the rear hub opening. Strike the stud firmly with a hammer to press it out, using the magnetic retriever to pull it through the tight rear clearance.

Feed the new extended stud through the same opening from behind. Using your stud installer tool (or a shallow socket acting as a spacer) and an open-ended lug nut, tighten the nut to pull the knurl of the stud fully into the hub. Leave one factory stud in place to prevent the hub from spinning while you torque the new studs down.

The rear hubs require more disassembly. You must remove the two 19mm bolts holding the brake caliper, secure the caliper out of the way with a bungee cord, and pull the brake rotor off. If the rear rotor is seized against the parking brake shoes, pop out the rubber grommet and loosen the adjuster wheel to release tension. Once the rotor is off, the stud removal and installation process is identical to the front.

Why You Should Upgrade While You're In There

Since you already have the vehicle safely raised and the wheels removed, this is the ideal time to upgrade your braking and suspension systems. With the rear calipers and rotors already coming off for stud clearance, swapping in upgraded pads or a set of lowering springs adds zero extra labor time to your afternoon.

Recommended Upgrade: Performance Slotted Brake Rotors and High-Friction Brake Pads to improve stopping power and reduce fade during aggressive driving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special tool to install wheel studs?

While a dedicated wheel stud installer tool features a bearing that prevents friction damage, you can effectively use a shallow socket or a stack of hardened washers as a spacer. Just ensure the open-ended lug nut sits flat against your spacer to pull the stud straight into the hub.

Why do I need extended wheel studs?

Extended studs are strictly required when installing slip-on wheel spacers thicker than 5mm. Factory studs do not offer enough thread length to safely secure the lug nuts once the spacer is sandwiched between the hub and the wheel. Running insufficient thread engagement invites catastrophic wheel separation.
