3rd Gen 4Runner 3.4L Intake Silencer: Why Owners Pull It
Every 1999-2004 4Runner with the 3.4L V6 has a big rectangular box hiding in its intake tube. Owners who took it out say the truck woke up. Here's what that box does and what they found.
The Short Answer (TL;DR)
The box between the airbox and throttle body on a 3rd gen 4Runner 3.4L (5VZ-FE) is an intake silencer. It breaks up intake pulses to keep the truck quiet. In this YotaTech write-up, an owner replaced it with a straight pipe and reported punchier throttle response, a stronger midrange and a deep intake growl, while cruise stayed quiet. A full intake kit gets rid of the box for you.

What the silencer does
Look at the tubing between the airbox and the throttle body and you'll see a wide box with a small hose coming off it. Inside are chambers and a slot that trap the low-frequency intake pulses so you don't hear them in the cab. The owner's view was that the box also costs the engine torque. On 1999-2002 trucks it's one box; the 1996-1998 trucks have extra boxes branching off the main hose.
What the owner did
- Removed the silencer and replaced it with a 2.5" ID mild steel pipe, about 5.625" long on his 2000 (he suggested 6.00" for the 96-98 trucks to allow for engine movement).
- The small hose on the silencer goes to the fuel pressure regulator. He re-routed it with a 1/4" plastic tee and 7/32" hose onto the nipple on the front of the intake plenum.
- He also fitted a stiffer EVAP hose across the bay so it wouldn't droop onto the engine.
The thread doesn't give clamp torque or tool sizes.

What changed
- Response: "Throttle response is punchier and more immediate," with better acceleration at all speeds.
- Sound: a deep growl when you get on it, and quieter than before at highway cruise.
- Fuel: he could make it ping on mid-grade, and a tank of premium stopped it. Run premium after the change.
He estimated 5-7 rwhp before the job and said afterward the estimate felt low, but he hadn't dyno tested it at the time of the write-up.
The bolt-on route
The DIY version means sourcing pipe, expanding it to size and re-plumbing the regulator hose. A kit made for the 1999-2004 4Runner replaces the whole path from filter to throttle body, with no silencer box in the way. Confirm your year and the 3.4L V6 before you order.

FAQ
Will my 4Runner be loud on the highway without the silencer?
The owner said cruise got quieter, and the growl only shows up at bigger throttle openings.
What's the hose on the silencer for?
It runs to the fuel pressure regulator. Tee it into the plenum nipple so it isn't left open.
