DIY Guide: BMW E46 Cold Air Intake Installation

Unlock the sound of your inline-six. This guide covers the installation of a performance air intake on the BMW 3-Series (E46 chassis).

  • Fitment: BMW 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i (1999–2006)
  • Engine Codes: M52TU, M54
  • Difficulty: Beginner (1/5)
  • Time Required: 30–45 Minutes

Tools Required

  • Ratchet with 10mm socket
  • Flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps)
  • T25 Torx driver (if removing MAF sensor from housing)
  • Trim removal tool or pliers (for intake scoop clips)
⚠️ PRE-INSTALLATION NOTE: Turn off the ignition. It is highly recommended to disconnect the negative battery terminal, as you will be unplugging the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.

Part 1: Removing the Factory Airbox

Step 1: Remove the Air Scoop

Locate the plastic air duct (snorkel) above the radiator that feeds air into the box. Remove the three plastic expansion clips securing it to the radiator support. Pull the scoop forward and set it aside.

Step 2: Unplug the MAF Sensor

Locate the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor connected to the back of the airbox. Depress the metal wire clip (or plastic tab) and pull the electrical harness off. Tuck the wire safely aside.

Step 3: Disconnect Intake Boot

Follow the MAF sensor toward the engine to find the rubber intake boot. Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp connecting the MAF to this boot.
Note: Do not remove the boot from the engine side, just detach it from the MAF.

Step 4: Remove Airbox Hardware

Locate the two 10mm bolts on the right side of the airbox (near the fender). Remove these bolts completely.

Step 5: Lift Out the Assembly

Grasp the airbox firmly. Rock it slightly to pull the MAF sensor neck out of the rubber intake boot, then lift the entire airbox assembly out of the engine bay.

Part 2: Critical Inspection (Don't Skip This!)

🔧 E46 "While You're In There" Check:
With the airbox removed, you now have a clear view of the Lower Intake Boot and the Disa Valve. The E46 is notorious for vacuum leaks here. Inspect the rubber boot ribs for cracks. If the boot looks dry-rotted or cracked, replace it now before installing the new intake.

Part 3: Installing the New Intake

Step 6: Transfer the MAF Sensor

Most aftermarket intakes reuse the factory MAF sensor housing. Remove the MAF from the stock airbox (held by clips or Torx screws depending on the year).
Important: Note the arrow on the MAF housing indicating airflow direction. It must point toward the engine.

Step 7: Install Heat Shield

Install the provided weather stripping onto the edges of the new heat shield. Mount the heat shield into the car using the original factory bolt holes from Step 4.

Step 8: Assemble & Install

  1. Attach the new filter adapter to the front of the MAF sensor.
  2. Insert the MAF sensor assembly through the heat shield opening.
  3. Connect the rear of the MAF sensor into the factory rubber intake boot. Tighten the hose clamp snugly.
  4. Re-plug the MAF harness. Ensure the cable is not stretched tight.

Step 9: Filter Installation

Slide the new cone air filter onto the adapter inside the heat shield. Tighten the clamp on the filter base. Ensure the filter is not rubbing against the headlight or ABS lines.

Part 4: Final Verification

  • Double Check: Ensure all clamps are tight and the MAF sensor plug is clicked in.
  • Start Engine: Start the car in neutral. If the idle is rough or bouncing, turn it off and check the intake boot connection for air leaks.
  • Test Drive: Listen for the new induction sound! Retighten clamps after 50 miles of driving.
