DIY Guide: Performance Air Intake for Subaru Legacy Outback Forester 2005-2008 2.5L Turbo for 2005-2008 Subaru Forester Legacy Outback 2.5L
Required Tools
- 10mm & 12mm Sockets with Ratchet and Extension
- 8mm Nut Driver or Flathead Screwdriver (for hose clamps)
- #2 Phillips Screwdriver (for MAF sensor screws)
- Plastic Trim Clip Removal Tool
The factory rubber turbo inlet hose on the EJ255 becomes brittle with age and heat cycles. When sliding the new reducer coupler onto the turbo inlet tube, support the inlet with your hand and avoid excessive twisting so you don’t tear the factory rubber boot underneath the intake manifold. Also, verify the rubber O-ring on the MAF sensor stays seated during transfer to prevent lean-condition trouble codes.
Phase 1: Factory Component Removal
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket. Pop the two plastic clips securing the front air intake scoop to the radiator core support and remove the scoop.
- Unplug the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harness. Unclip the wiring loom from the factory airbox lid and set it aside safely.
- Loosen the hose clamp at the turbo inlet duct using an 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver. Remove the 10mm and 12mm bolts securing the factory airbox assembly to the passenger-side fender well, then lift the entire airbox and corrugated hose out of the engine bay.
- Unscrew the two #2 Phillips screws holding the MAF sensor into the factory airbox lid. Carefully pull the sensor straight out without touching the delicate internal sensing filament.
Phase 2: Aftermarket Installation
- Insert the factory MAF sensor into the machined aluminum bung on the smaller polished intake pipe and secure it using the hardware provided on the bung.
- Attach the black stepped reducer coupler to the factory turbo inlet opening using two supplied stainless steel worm-gear clamps. Slide the MAF pipe into the reducer coupler, leaving the clamps finger-tight for alignment.
- Connect the curved polished aluminum extension pipe to the MAF pipe using the straight black coupler and two clamps. Align the welded mounting bracket on the curved pipe with the factory fender well mounting point and secure it using the factory bolt.
- Install the black cone air filter with the chrome top ring onto the end of the curved intake pipe and tighten its clamp. Tighten all remaining hose clamps with an 8mm nut driver, reconnect the MAF sensor harness, and reconnect the negative battery terminal.
