Performance Cold Air Intake for Dodge Nitro (2007-2010) 3.7L V6

The factory air intake system in your Dodge Nitro’s 3.7L V6 engine is designed for quiet operation and cost-effectiveness, not peak performance. Its convoluted pathway, restrictive air box, and paper filter choke your engine’s ability to efficiently draw in the air it needs, leading to sluggish throttle response and a feeling of untapped potential.

This high-flow cold air intake kit addresses these limitations head-on by replacing the entire restrictive OEM setup. Engineered to deliver a smoother, straighter path for air into your engine, it allows the 3.7L V6 to inhale a significantly greater volume of colder, denser air. This optimization results in a more complete combustion cycle, unleashing noticeable gains in both horsepower and torque, along with a much more aggressive and satisfying engine note.

Why You Need This Upgrade

  • Unleash Hidden Power: Replaces restrictive factory ducting with a high-flow pathway, allowing your 3.7L V6 engine to breathe easier and produce more power and torque.
  • Sharpen Throttle Response: Eliminates the "laggy" feeling of the stock intake, providing instant power delivery and sharper acceleration for a more engaging driving experience.
  • Aggressive Engine Sound: Enhances your Nitro’s acoustic character with a deep, powerful, and sporty intake roar during acceleration, letting everyone know you’re serious about performance.
  • Improved Fuel Efficiency (with proper driving): By optimizing the air-to-fuel ratio with denser air, this intake can lead to a more energetic and efficient combustion cycle, potentially improving MPG.
  • Direct Bolt-On Installation: Engineered for a perfect fit, utilizing existing mounting points for a straightforward upgrade using basic hand tools, getting you back on the road faster.

Installation & Tools

The Wrench Time

  • Estimated Time: 45-60 Minutes
  • Difficulty: 3/10 - Basic hand tools required. The only real fight is wrestling with 15-year-old, heat-cycled factory plastics and a bulky engine bay setup.

Tools You Will Need

  • 10mm Socket, Extension, and Ratchet (for the battery terminal and airbox mounting bolts)
  • 8mm Socket or 5/16" Nut Driver (for factory and aftermarket band clamps)
  • Small Flathead Screwdriver (for gently releasing the brittle sensor clips)
  • Silicone Spray or Soapy Water (crucial for safely seating the sensor into the new rubber grommet)
  • Panel Popper Tool (for removing factory wiring harness "Christmas tree" push-clips)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The 3.7L PowerTech engine doesn’t use a standard MAF; it relies on an IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor. The locking tab on the factory IAT wiring harness is notoriously brittle from years of trapped engine heat. Do NOT muscle it. Use a small flathead to lift the tab just a hair to release it. Additionally, the massive factory resonator box (known on the Nitro/Liberty forums as the "tumor" or "hat") sits directly on the throttle body. When prying it off, verify that the factory rubber O-ring doesn’t stay stuck to the throttle blade housing, or your new intake coupler won’t seat flush!

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Part from your 2007-2010 Dodge Nitro 3.7L

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench to prevent check engine lights and reset the ECU fuel trims.
  2. Unplug the IAT Sensor: Locate the IAT sensor plugged into the factory air tube. Use your small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the brittle retaining clip and unplug the harness. Carefully twist the sensor counter-clockwise and pull it straight out of the plastic tube. Set it somewhere safe.
  3. Disconnect the PCV Breather Hose: Find the factory crankcase vent hose running from the oil filler neck area to the side of the airbox. Squeeze the clamp with pliers or simply pull the hose off the plastic nipple. Be gentle to avoid cracking the aging plastic fittings.
  4. Loosen the Throttle Body Clamp: Grab your 8mm socket and loosen the band clamp securing the giant factory resonator "hat" to the top of the throttle body.
  5. Unbolt and Extract the Airbox Assembly: Use a 10mm socket with a long extension to remove the two mounting bolts holding the lower airbox tray to the passenger-side fender well. Grab the entire assembly and pull straight up with steady force to pop it off the lower rubber mounting grommets. Pull the whole unit out of the engine bay.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Dodge Nitro (2007-2010) 3.7L Engine - Red

  1. Mount the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone reducer straight down onto the bare throttle body. Ensure it is seated completely flush against the lip. Tighten the lower clamp to the throttle body using your 8mm socket, leaving the upper clamp loose.
  2. Assemble the Heat Shield: Bolt the new air filter adapter to the provided heat shield using the supplied hardware and a 10mm socket. Drop the completed shield into the engine bay, aligning the bottom tabs with the factory rubber grommet holes on the fender well. Lock it down.
  3. Transfer the IAT Sensor: Push the supplied rubber grommet into the pre-drilled hole on your new red intake tube. Apply a single drop of silicone spray to the IAT sensor O-ring. Gently push and twist the sensor into the grommet until it is fully seated. Do not push so hard that the grommet falls inside the tube!
  4. Install the Intake Tube and Filter: Slide the new red intake tube into the throttle body coupler. Align the opposite end with the heat shield adapter. Once the angle clears the fan shroud and radiator hoses, tighten all remaining hose clamps firmly with your 8mm socket. Clamp the new high-flow cone filter onto the end inside the heat shield.
  5. Reconnect Lines and ECU Relearn: Push the supplied silicone breather hose onto the engine’s PCV port and connect the other end to the welded nipple on your new intake tube. Plug the IAT sensor wiring harness back in until it clicks. Reconnect your negative battery terminal with the 10mm wrench. On the first startup, do not touch the gas pedal for 20 seconds. Let the engine idle perfectly still so the ECU can calibrate to the massive new volume of cold air.
