The Stock TL Weakness

The factory intake system on the 4th Generation Acura TL is engineered primarily for cabin silence and NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) suppression. To achieve this, Acura utilized restrictive plastic resonators and accordion-style rubber bellows that create significant internal turbulence. This turbulence disrupts laminar airflow, slowing the air charge before it reaches the throttle body. Furthermore, the OEM plastic housing is prone to heat soak; it traps radiant engine bay heat, significantly increasing Intake Air Temperatures (IATs). As IATs rise, the ECU retards ignition timing to prevent detonation, resulting in a noticeable loss of horsepower and sluggish low-end torque during spirited driving or in high-ambient conditions.

The Engineering Solution

This performance kit replaces the entire intake path with CNC-mandrel-bent T6061 polished aluminum piping. Aluminum provides a smoother internal surface compared to factory plastic, allowing for higher volumetric efficiency and a more direct air path. The kit features a high-flow, washable cone filter with multi-layered media that offers increased surface area for filtration without the pressure drop associated with paper filters. To manage vibration and engine movement, the system includes heavy-duty red silicone couplers and reinforced breather hoses that resist collapsing under high vacuum. By eliminating factory baffles, this system allows the J35 and J37 engines to breathe freely, yielding an estimated gain of 5-15 HP and a much more aggressive engine note under wide-open throttle.
